Bug #: 29469 Summary: Audio stops working; as a result, Rosetta Stone gets stuck Product: Wine Version: 1.3.35 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: winealsa.drv AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: philbradley@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Rosetta Stone 3.4.7 teaches you a language by playing an audio clip, prompting you to answer by selecting a multiple choice option.
Randomly audio will stop functioning (testing sound in winecfg - which shows that winealsa.drv is being used - also fails - the audio that plays is clipped and random, like rocks tumbling); Rosetta Stone doesn't proceed after attempting to play a clip after this point, so the program gets stuck (it's not frozen, it just never brings up the multiple choice question).
Restarting my computer (Ubuntu 11.10, 64 bit) solves this problem, though logging out doesn't. There doesn't appear to be a specific point in Rosetta Stone at which audio breaks.

--- Comment #1 from philbradley@gmail.com 2011-12-28 17:28:14 CST --- Actually, just restarting pulseaudio, then rosetta stone, seems to sort it out.
This seems to be related to this issue: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27895
which in turns says most of the discussion is happening here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28723 (mind you, I don't have winecfg set to Windows 7, but to Vista, though this behaviour was also common under windows xp mode)
supposedly a raft of audio bugfixes are on their way in the 1.3.36 - I hope that this will go away.
