Summary: TroopMaster hangs on startup Product: Wine Version: 1.1.31 Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://www.troopmaster.com OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: al_turner@comcast.net
TroopMaster installs, but hangs on startup. Main window will not activate (animation works, but no response to keyboard or mouse). Does not even get to the DotNet download hangup as mentioned in bug 8997. More like 18801 but I don't even get the popup window showing the attempt to connect to FTP.
As far as I can tell, the FTP attempt only happens if you activate the DOTNET function (after installing the software). I have not been able to get to the point of activating the DOTNET since I can't get it that far yet.
I followed the HOWTO from the AppDB that describes the install/kill/restart process.

--- Comment #2 from Al Turner al_turner@comcast.net 2009-10-21 23:29:52 --- OK, maybe a correction to the prior posts. The program may not actually HANG, but it is extraordinarily slow to respond. I left it hung in the background for a while (maybe 20 min) and when I closed the window on top, the Troopmaster window was active. I got it to activate the DOTNET function, and now it seems to be acting like bug 8997.
Is the slow response a different issue?

I have a problem when TM is using the moving water background. It seems like it's hung, but I think it's just that it's REALLY REALLY SLOW. The way I got around it was to disable gecko, then set the TM background in File->Preferences to still water.
I'm not at the machine where I have TM installed now, so I'm going by memory, but try this:
- rename the gecko folder in the windows directory temporarily - run TroopMaster. You should get a popup about HTML rendering being disabled, or something like that. Click Ok, then set the background under Prefereneces to Still Water. - exit TM. - restore gecko folder - get back in TM. If wine wants to install gecko, let it. Things should work now, except for the DotNet hanging bug.
I don't know if this is a wine bug, but I haven't noticed the moving water problem on XP or Vista.
Hope this helps.

--- Comment #4 from Al Turner al_turner@comcast.net 2009-10-22 20:57:37 --- Tim,
Thanks for the help. That seems to have resolved the issue. I'll work on seeing if bug 8997 is still a problem with my current settings.

--- Comment #5 from Andrew Nguyen arethusa26@gmail.com 2009-10-22 21:44:55 --- Fixed is not an appropriate status for this bug, since there is clearly no patch that has been committed in Wine.

--- Comment #7 from Al Turner al_turner@comcast.net 2009-10-22 22:02:49 --- My apologies for the status error.
Tim confirmed he had the same problem with TroopMaster, and advised the workaround he used. I applied the workaround and it resolved my issue as well.
I do not know if the problem actually resides/resided in wine. The change to get around the problem (agonizingly slow response time) was to change the background, eliminating the animation feature. Not a big deal and the program functionality remains intact.
You are correct -- there was no change to wine to address the issue. Not sure what change would be needed or possible.
Given the observation from two users that the problem exists (thought somewhat overstated in the bug description), is it still UNCONFIRMED?

Al,
Glad to hear that helped. Feel free to figure out bug 8997. Everytime I try and look at it, I make no progress.
One thing I have done is to set up TroopMaster to prompt for read-only and prompt for download. That way, if I only want to look at something or generate a report, I can get in w/o a problem. I don't need to kill the process and get in again since I'm using the local disk data.

I don't believe this is an issue anymore. I haven't had a problem with this bug in quite a while. (Bug 8997 is still an annoyance, and one of these days, I'd like to get back to it.)

It took a lot of time to load the program, I thought it hanged, but it didnt.
I installed the full version, when it asked full or trial. And now I cant actually use the software, because it wants the lisence but it definitely started.
wine 1.7.22

The bug is from 2009, what version of TroopMaster did you use to test? archive.org does not have the 2008 program version but have the 2005 and 2010.

https://web.archive.org/web/20060512114229/http://www.troopmaster.com/incomi...
Unfortunately the bug does not specify the program version, so it's hard to guess what was used in the test.
I tested the 2010 version, the hang from comment 2 is still present, the program keeps chewing 100% CPU for 4 minutes before opening the main screen with the river animation (winetricks mfc42 required before installation).

--- Comment #14 from Tim Williams tjandacw@yahoo.com --- I just tried this with the latest version of TroopMaster (2014). It hung for me for about a minute. Definitely less time than I remember when I last posted about this. When using the still water background, the program starts up right away.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, wine-1.6-rc2

I can reproduce the problem in Troopmaster 2015 (slow startup time, unresponsive application) using Wine 1.6.2/1.7.38, but the problem is not present in Wine 1.7.39 or 1.7.40.

Moving water background is no longer causing TM to start up so slow it seems to be non responsive. Program still hangs after DotNet database download (bug 8997). As soon as I get the 1.7.39+ update, I try again.

No hang (see title) and the water animatio is really smooth...
wine 1.9.24.
