AOM Gold does not draw a distinction between lit and unlit areas. In theattached screen shot it shows all dark spots as lit up but does not show the objects unless an ally's line of sight touches it.
Line fo sight is visible on minimap but not on the real map.

Go into the Age of Mythology/gfxconfig2 directory, backup i845.gfx, and replace it with a copy of gforce3.gfx
You may have to replace different files depending on your Graphics card? I don't remember where I found this fix but it works for me so yeah...
