Summary: Half Life 1, Opposing Force and Blue Shift crash before the menu loads Product: Wine Version: 1.2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: epsilon72@cox.net
Half Life 1, and its expansions Opposing Force and Blue Shift crash before the menu is able to load.
In all three instances the menu background is visible but the program crashes before the text in the menu appears. This happens within a second or so after starting the game.
Someone might want to test CounterStrike 1.6 to see if the problem is present in other goldsrc games.
Steps to reproduce: 1. Install Half Life 1, Opposing Force and Blue Shift via Steam. 2. Start Half Life 3. Game crashes
Expected results: -Game does not crash.
This is strange because up until now these games have been working flawlessly.

Sorry about that...I'm attaching a log file of all output from starting steam to when the game crashes.
By "up until now" I mean - I did a fresh install of steam with wine 1.1.44 and the game doesn't work. I then upgraded to 1.2 and the same thing happened.
Before that, I was using an older steam installation (a ~/.wine directory copied over from a Debian install that was running Wine version 1.0.1) and this worked under 1.1.44, with the same setup (Gentoo Linux amd64, nvidia 8800gt, 195.36.24 driver)

These are the registry settings from a working installation of Half Life 1. I have tried duplicating these on a fresh installation, but the problem persists.
I've also confirmed that CounterStrike 1.6 suffers from the same problem, so perhaps all goldsrc games are affected.
If there is anyone out there who can get these games to work with the current version of wine, please post your configuration (distro, wine version, hardware, driver versions, etc)

--- Comment #5 from Will winehq@williammanley.net 2010-08-24 15:55:12 --- As mentioned in the AppDB entry for Half-Life I am also having this problem. I run half-life or sven-coop and it freezes on the title screen before the menu items have appears.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04LTS and have tried with the stock 1.1.42 and 1.2 and 1.3.1 from the Ubuntu wine team PPA ( launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa ). I using an Thinkpad X61s with Intel 965GM graphics.
Is this a duplicate of #24064 - Half-Life no longer starts after latest Steam update (20 Aug 2010)?

--- Comment #6 from Will winehq@williammanley.net 2010-08-24 16:32:24 --- Also similarly to #24064 the problem disappears with WINEDEBUG=+relay , but runs slowly even with STDERR piped to /dev/null.

You know, this just might be part of #24064. Strangely enough, TF2 for me is completely broken as well - just as a commenter in that bug says - the game crashes as soon as you are supposed to see the 3D game world.
If true, that sucks...with one tiny update Valve can break almost all wine compatibility!

Confirmed. The game runs with WINEDEBUG=+relay set, but it is so slow that it is unplayable.
This bug should be marked as a duplicate of #24064, then. I'll link that bug to the HL1 page.
(a side note: the "working" installation of half life 1 that I have is probably running a non-updated version of steam)

--- Comment #9 from Marco.Leise@gmx.de 2010-09-17 07:06:23 CDT --- If additional debug output slows down wine and 'fixes' the issue it would seem to be a race condition in the code, right? Something (sound driver, inter process memory) may be used before it is ready. Half-Life also creates a crash log (e.g. hl_4554_crash_2010_9_17T11_35_18C0.mdmp) on my system and drops out. I will try to slow down my cpus with something and see if it helps.
