jlh: if it does run for you, maybe I'm battling a configuration issue here. Could you send your wine.ini (the general part and the part, if there is one, regarding wine). It would be very much appreciated.
Fixing the remaining problems in Shareaza might be a reasonable option. For example the lockup on changing menus is very peculiar and might be caused by Shareaza using undocumented/unsupported features in the win32 api. Making this work reliably in wine could be a much bigger task than slightly changing Shareaza. And I have heard of no other programs that exhibit this particular problem.
