Summary: MiG Alley: invisible menu items Product: Wine Version: 1.1.41 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: gyebro69@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=27097) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=27097) console log including a crash
Menu items are invisible in MiG Alley: both the demo and the retail version is affected. You can blindly click on the menu items (causing an exception in Wine) but you can't see them.
This is what it looks like the main menu in Wine: http://i39.tinypic.com/34gwy7n.jpg
and this is a screenshot from Windows: http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/mig-alley/screenshots/gameShotId,36546...
The demo can be downloaded here: http://www.clubic.com/lancer-le-telechargement-1920-0-mig-alley.html (the site is in French, but the demo is in English)
Installing native mfc42 and its companion by winetricks doesn't help. My terminal output contains a crash: Wine always crashes when you click on any of the (invisible) menu items. I tried the game with a couple of older versions of Wine (1.1.9, 1.1.15, 1.1.22, 1.1.27, 1.1.39): items were invisible in all.

--- Comment #5 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- MSS seems to be MIDAS Sound System
Putting those files in same directory that Mig.exe is fine for the game
But then it starts to complain about roots.dir
It's mentioned here
http://www.copysense.co.uk/migalley.php
Haven't figured out how to fix that.

--- Comment #7 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com --- Haven't looked to see if it's actually missing from the demo.
I think it's Miles Sound System and Smacker, actually; see http://www.radgametools.com/miles.htm http://www.radgametools.com/smkmain.htm Don't know a good download source offhand, but many game demos would probably bundle it.

--- Comment #10 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- You are correct btw. That download site usually gives correct files.
found this:
The two different size demos are basically the same thing (both use the "Hot Shot" mission), but the larger demo also includes/installs a 47mb intro video into the smacker folder. (This is the same video used for the intro on the retail version)
Big Demo @ Empire (download: 94mb, install: 119mb): http://www.empireinteractive.com/us...port/demos1.htm
Smaller Demo @ 3DGamers (download: 47mb, install: 72mb): http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/mi...osmall.exe.html
Hard to find valid links I quess.

I could not find any other files, the game is from 1999.
Anyway, the bug is still valid in wine 1.7.16, I just tested here.

It doesn't crash (yet), but I need those texts to move on.
What debug channels should we use? That doesnt tell much

--- Comment #18 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- The download link for the demo is no longer available so I removed the link from this bug report. I still have the demo on my hdd and the problem with the invisible text in the menus is still valid, tested in wine-3.16-149-gb1a3b9e5ce. In wine-staging the game crashes just when the empty menu screen appears with some X related errors, but this obviously needs a separate bug report.
