Did you try to disable the WM composition?
Yes. It seems that it only appears with metacity with enabled composition.
By the way: Now on openSUSE 11.3 this non-refreshing area is all black.

--- Comment #6 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-02-14 22:28:53 CST --- Still happening, though setting win7 mode doesn't seem to help here. (This is on Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2.)
Moving the steam window around leaves damage to the right and below the window.

--- Comment #7 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-06-28 00:23:09 CDT --- Still happening.

--- Comment #8 from Kuro dragon_a.p@gmx.net 2012-07-08 07:12:49 CDT --- Using dcompmgr and openbox here.
Workaround for me: Add "Steam.exe" to Application list and change windows version to 7 Uncheck "Allow the window manager to decorate the windows" for Steam.exe
Btw: With cairo-compmgr and enabled composition Steam windows are not even visible...

--- Comment #12 from Adam Mizerski adam@mizerski.pl --- Well, installing steam on wine is not a problem (I'm using native one for a long time). Testing it under metacity is a bigger, because I'm using KDE now.
Maybe someone using MATE should test it?
