The Office '97 installer dialogs show their
text briefly, then erase it.  Makes it awful
hard to use.

This affects absolutely everything.  
The Sketchup installer also doesn't show text.
Even the menus in notepad don't show!

This is on my ubuntu 8.10 laptop.  Guess I'll try a few other machines.

That was with proprietary nvidia drivers, so it had 
visual effects on.  Turning them off made the text
show up, but it's corrupt; lots of garbage pixels set.  Ugh!

I've heard of this problem independently in a few other places (which I will
look for shortly). Scott Ritchie thinks it was introduced in the 8.10 release
of Ubuntu, probably by some change to the underlying libraries.

The launchpad bug points back to wine bug 16146 so if your garbage text matches
the screenshot, this is probably a duplicate.
