Quickbooks 2008/2009's installer has an optional critical update checker.
The updater successfully downloads the "update list" but hangs when attempting to download the updates themselves.

This log is created by the app itself, and shows that the first download is successful, but the second fails.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-04-23 13:44:16 --- Does native wininet help?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18171
--- Comment #4 from Ken Sharp kennybobs@o2.co.uk 2009-04-23 21:15:43 --- Kind of, it stops the hang but causes a 15225 error http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/Pages/KnowledgeBaseArticle/fbfa...
Which then leads to an unhandled exception and exits.

Does native ie6 fix that?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18171
--- Comment #6 from Ken Sharp kennybobs@o2.co.uk 2009-04-24 18:24:51 --- Nope. Native IE6 makes no difference.
Under 1.1.20, IE6 (+/- native wininet) asks to be the default browser, but result is the same.

--- Comment #8 from Alex alex.perez@adalsys.com 2011-06-04 05:20:54 CDT --- Updated to wine 1.3.21. Quickbooks loads painlessly but update seems not to be able to connect to update through remote server (error displayed "server not responding ...")
Keept getting following errors (although I dont' think this is related with the lack of connectivity) err:toolbar:ToolbarWindowProc unknown msg 04a0 wp=0003019e lp=00000000 err:rebar:REBAR_WindowProc unknown msg 04a0 wp=0003019e lp=00000000 err:toolbar:ToolbarWindowProc unknown msg 04a0 wp=0003019e lp=00000000
Any thoughts?

--- Comment #11 from Ken Sharp kennybobs@o2.co.uk 2013-07-13 10:50:13 CDT --- This appears to be back in Wine 1.6-rc5 but if you keep hitting "Next" when the installer seems to have failed it will eventually move on.
Went back to 1.5.14 to confirm that it continues much easier in that version.
Looks like a different problem.
