Summary: Static sound effects with Syberia 2 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.57. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: daniel.skorka@stud.uni-karlsruhe.de
In Syberia 2, every sound effect is accompanied by a kind of soft scratching noise (similar to a grammophone record that has been played many times). If no sound is playing, there is no noise. Other apps with dsound work fine. Syberia 2 in Windows XP works fine. I tried playing with the settings in the audio tab of winecfg, which didn't change anything. I use ALSA.

--- Comment #3 from Andrew West andrew@linuxadventurer.co.uk 2008-06-27 14:14:23 --- I can confirm this, tried with both ALSA and OSS output.
Both display the problem, but ALSA has an additional (probably unrelated) problem of losing sound occasionally.

--- Comment #6 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2008-08-19 11:45:45 --- If we mean the same bug, this is a regression, which in my case at least, appeared shortly before 1.0. While displaying the menu for instance, a loud intermittent yet regular noise is heard roughly every second as if by a steam-powered locomotive. In my case, I believe several versions between 0.9.59 and .60 or rc1 were not affected (actually, comment #2 surprises me), but I need time to check exactly in what version the noise appeared. I've never changed sound settings, just upgraded wine.

--- Comment #8 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2008-09-13 09:28:15 --- Now that I'm able to perform regression testing, I identified the cause of the bug I mentioned in comment #6.
commit 64cbea525bdca2a986774fe6d88adcb865654513 Author: Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com Date: Wed Jun 18 18:53:48 2008 +0900 winmm: Add the tests for mmioOpen and mmioSetBuffer, make them pass under Wine. (That's dlls/winmm, not dsound)
Somehow I erroneously reported the bug "appeared shortly before 1.0", I'm sorry. 1.0 is fine, and 1.1.0-4 are not.
This makes me believe that the bug I observe and now located is different from the original poster's and other commenters, who say that 0.9.57-58 and 1.0 are affected, or that "every sound effect is accompanied by a kind of soft scratching noise". In my case the locomotive-like noise appears in the initial game menu (very loud) and some scenes only (e.g. in the ship, after reaching Syberia, close to the end, not loud). Should I open a separate bug report?
Would you like a log of channel mmio?

--- Comment #10 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2008-09-16 06:01:13 --- "1.1.0-4" was meant to say 1.1.0-1.1.4. I checked again, and the locomotive-style noise I mentioned in comment #6 is still present in 1.1.4.

--- Comment #12 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2008-10-09 12:21:44 --- To download the Syberia2 demo, I found http://www.4players.de/4players.php/download_start/PC-CDROM/Download/6172.ht... The demo produces the exact same locomotive-like noise in the menu as the full game (tested with 1.1.5 this time).
