Summary: Assassin's Creed: White Screen after intro on ati Product: Wine Version: 1.2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mcflow-forum@gmx.net
Created an attachment (id=29648) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=29648) output of wine when running Assassin's Creed
There is a problem when trying to run Assassin's Creed on ATI cards with the catalyst driver. The problem does not occur on my Desktop PC with an nvidia card.
When I start Assassin's Creed the intros will play fine. When I skip them or when they ended the screen will just turn white. I hear the music playing but nothing seems to happen. I renamed the movies folder and sometimes I can see the Assassin's Creed logo fading in but it will suddenly stop to fade. I attached the error log.
System Information: ArchLinux 64 Bit bin32-wine (it's wine 1.2) Intel core i3 330m ATI Mobility Radeon HD4550 (catalyst 10.5) 3 GB Ram

Same problem: Logo and intro are working fine, but then all I get is a white screen with sound but no possibility to interact.

Björn, could you please try Assassin's Creed with at least wine-1.3.0 again? I had the problem on a wine version on my Nvidia System as well, I don't remember which version it was before I went on holidays. When I upgraded to wine-1.3.0 the white screen was gone on my nvidia system.
Still present on my ATI notebook card.

--- Comment #4 from Björn bjoernguth@web.de 2010-08-24 06:19:05 --- I tried it again with wine 1.3.1-1 and nvidia 256.44-2, but the problem is nearly the same. Now I can abort the intro, what was not possible before. But afterwards, there is still a white screen with the sound of the menu but no possibility to interact with it.

--- Comment #5 from David aim_here2002@yahoo.co.uk 2011-05-28 12:31:49 CDT --- Created an attachment (id=34941) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=34941) Assassin.ini file; breaks slightly slower than the default one
I have this problem too, on an ATI 4870, but with a little jiggery-pokery I can get slightly further.
When the game is installed, the Assassin.ini config file (where the graphics options are stored, among other things) is almost totally unpopulated, and presumably when starting up, the game begins with nonminimal defaults, which cause the breakage.
By downloading someone's posted-on-the-internet Assassin.ini, and tinkering, I was able to get past the initial white screen lockup, and traverse a few options, including setting graphics options and creating a profile. However, clicking 'New Game' goes back to a lockup, similar to the first one, but with an added cursor on the screen. I like to think of that cursor as a sign of progress.
The file can be found in c:\users<whatever it is you call yourself>\Application Data\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed\Assassin.ini
The line that caused the problem was "PostFX=1". Replacing it with "PostFX=0" gets me past the first white-screen lockout.
Maybe someone can use this info to investigate a bit further and find out what the problem is, or at least tinker enough to get a workaround

--- Comment #6 from Aaron rnbrznr@gmail.com 2012-06-10 11:09:00 CDT --- I have conducted a test with the AMD 12.6 Beta drivers, and can confirm that the DirectX 9 version of the game does not have this issue. However with the AMD 12.4 drivers, this issue persists. Can anyone else confirm this?

I can also confirm that upgrading to the beta drivers does fix this issue when running the Dx9 version.
