Summary: Ballistic Paddle game - displayed incorrectly. Product: Wine Version: 1.2-rc7 Platform: x86 URL: http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Ballistic.html OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: turbolad995@hotmail.co.uk
This is a tricky one to describe. If you download, unzip and run paddle in Wine version 1.2-rc7, you will find the "paddle" (that is the thing you control in the game with your mouse) is almost invisible. To see what it should look like, view the screenshot in download URL.
When tested in Wine version 1.1.42 the "paddle" looked normal. Possible regression after Wine version 1.1.42?
Many 16-bit Windows games have problems running in Wine. It's worth trying old 16-bit Windows games in Wine as these are the ones Wine has trouble running.
If anyone could improve the title of this bug, please do.

Please perform a regression test:
Sorry, that looks to complicated lol. This game worked fine in Wine version 1.1.42, but now (in Wine 1.2-rc7) the "paddle" thing you control is almost invisible and the bonus things that fall down are almost invisible.
Anyone can download this game via the URL link. Run in Wine, then start playing by clicking the "OK" button and then right-clicking to start the game. It's controlled with the mouse.

I can't get Wine version 1.2 for Ubuntu. It installs version 1.2-rc7 so I don't know if Wine version 1.2 has solved this problem? Running the classic 16-bit games in Wine seems to be a bit "hit and miss" at the moment, as bug 20521 shows. That said, I think it's good for Wine to support these games, as 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows won't load 16-bit programs at all!
When (if?) I get Wine version 1.2 installed, I will let you know if the Ballistic/Paddle games works properly.

Something must have happened to Wine between these versions to have caused this? This is a 16-bit game and I appreciate that I can run these retro 16-bit games on my 64-bit computer. How do I perform a "clean WINEPREFIX" and how do I run a "regression test"?
I installed Wine 1.2 using the "software centre" in Ubuntu. Can I cleanly re-install Wine 1.2?
Sorry, I've been using Ubuntu for less than 1 year, having been using Windows for years. This problem never existed until I updated Wine to version 1.2rc7, according to the instructions on the winehq website: http://www.winehq.org/download/deb
Does this problem only affect users of Ubuntu, perhaps? I only upgraded Wine to get the mouse pointer working properly in Lemmix (a lemmings clone).

I've tried removing and re-installing Wine 1.2 and each time it re-installs, it adds several other things with Wine 1.2 - not just Wine 1.2 on its own. I still have this problem with the Paddle game that never existed before. Why am I the only one here having this problem? Has anyone tried this on Ubuntu 64-bit - which I'm using?

Regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
Yes, I tried it under Lucid 64bit in 1.2 and have no problem.
The gameplay is fine - but the APPEARANCE is bad and wrong. The thing you control with your mouse and the falling bonus items are the wrong colours.
I done what you said, assuming you meant go into the terminal and perform this: mv ~/.wine ~/.wine.bak The next time I opened the BALISTIC.EXE game with Wine (after performing the step above), I got a message about Wine configuration being updated, before the game opened.
Tried the game again, the appearance is still wrong but the gameplay is fine, albeit much harder to see the "paddle" you control and other things in the gameplay.
The regression test looks scary and complicated as I'm still a newbie to Linux. I don't understand the regression testing page. Sorry, I can't help much more, other than describing the problem.
It's nice being able to use Linux and Wine and be able to run these 16-bit games that Microsoft won't allow you to run on 64-bit Windows, I appreciate the amount of work that goes into Wine. :)

This is very strange!!
I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS and all the settings are set to their defaults in Ubuntu via System > Administration > NVIDIA X Server Settings.
I've tried opening BALISTIC.EXE in the terminal with the word wine in front of it, but all that does is run the game. That said, if you run wine in a terminal for other Windows programs, you may get a few lines of text appear, but not with the ballistic game.
I had no problems running this game under Wine 1.1.42 - no appearance problems at all.
I've spent hours of my spare time learning the terminal and it's still new to me, having been using Microsoft Windows for years. I will try the regression test - if I can get it to work, I will post again.
BTW when I tested this game in Windows XP, I discovered that the mouse is not supposed to leave the game's window until you right-click. I guess that probably requires a separate bug report??

--- Comment #18 from David turbolad995@hotmail.co.uk 2010-07-28 06:19:43 --- Sorry, not been able to run the regression test, I can't work it out at all. :(
Since newbies to Ubuntu/Linux like myself learn of Wine to run their favourite Windows programs and games, I think we could save a lot of time and aggro if Wine had a "debug" mode included with the program. For example, in Ubuntu, if you click Applications > Wine and in there include a debug mode which collects the information that the developers of Wine are asking users to provide in these bug reports, it would save users providing incomplete or wrong information. It would save the Wine developers a LOT of time trying to track the problem by running regression tests etc and in cases like this, not being able to reproduce the problem the user is experiencing.
I'm sure users of Windows XP and later know that if something goes wrong, you get a box asking you to send the information to Microsoft. If Wine could implement something similar, the Wine developers would get the bug reports and regression tests without expecting newbies (like myself) to follow some very complicated instructions.
Sorry I've not been able to help no more. My screenshot is the best I can do in order to prove there is some glitch, but it doesn't stop me from liking Wine and appreciating the massive amount of work that goes into developing Wine.
