Summary: Default paper size A4 instead of my printers default Product: Wine Version: 1.1.39 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ToddAndMargo@verizon.net
Created an attachment (id=26481) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=26481) cups paper size
Hi All,
Would you guys fix this for me?
Word Pro, Note Pad Plus, all think my default printer is my Okidata B4350. And it is. But, all new documents default to A4 as the paper size and it is not. It is "Letter". Wine is not picking up the default paper size from my printer.
Many thanks, -T

similar to bug 15942?
No, I do not think so. When printing larger than A4, 15942 gets its printout clipped. On this one, if you change the paper size to what it is suppose to be, it prints fine.

If you want to print something other than letter to my printer, you have to use the manual feed try. And, that would show up in a real hurry. I have attached a screen shot of Open Office's (3.2.0) File, Printer Settings dialog.
Also what paper size is selected in notepad by default?
A4. I will attach that too.

On a hunch, I tried my shop workstation (CentOS 4.x). It also has the A4 problem. So both my Linux workstations have the same problem.
I think I am missing your point. EVERY Linux program (Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, gedit, gimp) that I could find, gets the default printer and the paper size correctly. If my settings were wrong, this would not be the case. And, I attached a screen shot of my CUPS settings for my default printer. Did you see anything wrong?
This is what I do not get: if *all* my Linux programs get it correctly, why is this a "system setting" issue?
And, why does Wine, also a Linux program, get it wrong?
I have been wrong on my suppositions before, more often then I would like to admit, so I will keep an open mind. I just don't get it how this is not a Wine issue.

Try any wine version after 1.3.5
All versions prior to that seem to feed media=A4 to lpr no matter what you choose for page size. However, it is also necessary to set the default on cups for the paper size you wish to print on because wine will not tell what page size you have set even though it picks up from cups but I suppose that meets your purpose given that you want your printer's default to be used.

Good news. Unfortunately 1.3.5 breaks Lotus Approach. See bug #24857. I had to revert to 1.3.4 and never checked this bug before reverting. :-(

I posted a bug report http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25581, I think it's the print dialog not sending the correct info to cups spooler. Am using latest Wine 1.3.25 as well. I thought it was the landscape issue but now I think it's a paper size issue as well.

--- Comment #16 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@gmail.com 2011-08-30 22:48:47 CDT --- Hi Guys,
Would you guys please consider fixing this? Every time I create a division or new document in Word Pro, every time I try to print a report from Approach, the paper defaults back to A4 and ruins my print out. I have to correct every print out and reprint. This bug is a complete pain in the neck!
Many thanks, -T

--- Comment #17 from Justin R jrittenh@nd.edu 2012-08-23 10:54:39 CDT --- I'm seeing this same issue on 1.5.11. I can print from any native application, but Wine applications want to default to A4. This is particularly troublesome with Office 2010, as it displays Letter as the default in all the print configuration options, but it's sent to the printer as A4.

It is still and issue on 1.7.44. Did you do something on 1.7.45? Do you need me to test it on 1.7.45? I have been using Wine-Staging as they have more stuff fixed, but I could sneak one of yours in if you need me to.
