Summary: Spore: incorrect rendering of rivers Product: Wine Version: 1.1.4 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mizipzor@gmail.com
The rivers are very deep and steep in all stages of the game, see attached screenshots.
Also note that its just not the rendering, its quite easy to get stuck down in the river. I just named the bug rendering because I dont know what else to call it.

--- Comment #3 from mizipzor mizipzor@gmail.com 2008-09-09 15:57:17 --- Maybe its hard to see, but in the first screenshot, in the minimap, a long, black, straight line can be seen. This line coincides with the "river". Other users (on windows) that Ive talked to apparently doesnt have neither rivers nor lines. Should these things even be in the game?

Here they are seen again, with the freecam mode toggled in. Long and straight lines cutting the landscape into sections.

--- Comment #8 from mizipzor mizipzor@gmail.com 2008-09-09 20:17:07 --- This error occurs both with vanilla wine 1.1.4 and with the patches for z-depth. Although I cloned the latest git master today which included this: http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/?a=commitdiff;h=932e95c111118b643650d6...
Which made the cracks smaller (not completely gone) but at least I can get around the world now, so the game is playable. Ill see if I can get around to taking a screenshot.
My own theory to the bug is that the bitmap Spore uses for heightmap/level/whatever is somehow incorrectly calculated, so the size falls one pixel short, leaving a void gap, which causes those chasms to be created throughout the world.

--- Comment #11 from mizipzor mizipzor@gmail.com 2008-09-10 16:29:13 --- There you can see the differences between the released version of wine and the version I checked out with git. Both are with the 15883 patch, otherwise you wouldnt see anything at all.
Although, in that screenshot it doesnt seem better in the git version, but I recall that at the earlier stages I didnt get stuck in the "rivers" as often as I used to.
Also, most of the graphics seem offset, but if you can see it in the minimap, thats the exact same location. I dont know if this has something to do with the generation of the planet.
The trees are also missing, is this another known bug?

The lines aren't always in the same direction, but they *are* always the same size. However, this doesn't apply to all worlds I visit. Some have these stripes scarring the landscape and some are just fine.

--- Comment #23 from no one mojedokumenty@o2.pl 2008-09-25 07:45:52 --- Please indicate which SPORE version you are running when reporting this bug (i.e. 1.00 or 1.01).
I've been happily running SPORE 1.00 without the river glitch on a patched 1.1.4 wine version until I decided to update to 1.01. No registry changes have been made.
Now, it does not really matter whether I'm running a patched 1.1.4 or a clean 1.1.5, the landscape has rivers all over it. Also I'm unable to use medium settings, which was previously possible. The only culprit I can blame is the update 1.00 to 1.01, since I did not update wine to 1.1.5 until the problem emerged.

I'm also an opensuse user, take a look at http://www.sendspace.pl/file/tJuYz3be/ where I uploaded the last patched wine version that worked for me without the river glitches on spore 1.00. It's basically the one with the recommended patch for 1.1.4 (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15883). The package has been compiled with the extra spore patch on opensuse 11. See if you run into problems like mine if you upgrade spore to 1.01.

--- Comment #26 from cthulhu nick.savolainen@gmail.com 2008-09-26 18:58:25 --- Thanks very much, with your wine package the fissures/crevices/crevasses are gone. I had to disable fbo again because I was getting a black screen instead of the galaxy, but once i did that it seems fine with my version 1.01.
I am though having an unrelated issue where water on some planets isn't rendering at all, that i only noticed after i upgraded to 1.01. I guess I'll post a seperate bug on that.

--- Comment #27 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2008-09-27 03:00:24 --- @no one:
Could you try which of the 3 parts in the patch ( http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15883 ) is responsible for the problem? Only apply one single diff part and also try combinations. Probably we could point out the wrong behaviour a little bit better. I couldn't test it here, because I haven't got the game.

I've set the following parameters in the registry:

Newly created planets (they will be created by starting a new game on some other planet) don't have those river-like artifacts anymore.
