Yes, it's still the same here with Wine 1.5.4 and a Nvidia 250 card + Nvidia driver 295.49. It'd be nice if someone with Ati or Intel video card could test the demo.

In intel card without d3dx9 the game silently crashes, with d3dx9 the game shows only black screen. I can hear only background music.

--- Comment #16 from Pierre Etchemaite pe-winehq@concept-micro.com 2012-06-08 17:58:16 CDT --- For what it's worth, doing some tests using the french demo from http://www.clubic.com/demo-jeux-video-10002-0-still-life-2-demo-jouable-1.ht..., game crashes at startup with plain Wine 1.5.5, but with native DirectX DLLs it goes on, and seem to work ok (menus, videos), until the actual game starts and then the display is messed up as described in this bugreport. I'm not sure it's just textures that aren't right though, I'm no specialist but I'd say geometry is broken too.
Setting video memory size (to 512 in my case) slightly improves display. For example, the "cellphone display" is in the right place instead of showing up on top of scene: - without Direct3D/VideoMemorySize: http://ks369561.kimsufi.com/~petchema/wine/sl2/StillLife2DemoFR4-noVMS.jpg - with Direct3D/VideoMemorySize=512: http://ks369561.kimsufi.com/~petchema/wine/sl2/StillLife2DemoFR4-VMS512.jpg
(Damn, this game looks interesting and is at half price on gog.com for a few days, but looks unplayable for the moment...)

--- Comment #28 from Zachary J zakarjor@yahoo.com --- I've added image of Witcher that seems to have similar artifact since wine-1.9.13 with black beams emanating from face and body.
Still Life 2 only has thin beams from the face, and a large black polygon emanating from wall or pillars or something. This is quite an improvement from previous wine versions where all sorts of broken textures occurred.
Still Life 2 has d3dx9_43.dll, d3dcompiler_43.dll overriden since without it:
err:d3dcompiler:compile_shader HLSL shader parsing failed wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xfffffff8...
Witcher has d3dx9_36.dll overriden, otherwise no graphics except texts in menu and after starting a game:

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21161
--- Comment #29 from Matteo Bruni matteo.mystral@gmail.com --- The Witcher's issue should be fixed by enabling the CheckFloatConstants registry key with a recent Wine (see bug 34052, comment 75). I guess you could try the same with Still Life 2, in case it helps.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21161
--- Comment #30 from Zachary J zakarjor@yahoo.com --- I tried the registry entry for CheckFloatConstants but that didn't help.
I also found that recent wine (last checked was 1.9.20) somehow has the game load d3dx9_31.dll instead of d3dx9_43.dll and d3dcompiler_43.dll. But no difference either way.
There is a renderer engine that comes with Still Life 2: xcDxOldschool.dll, xcDxShader.dll, and xcEngine.dll. I wonder if this is what causes problems interacting with wine. I have Display options set with texture quality and shader quality both high, and anti-aliasing at 4x. Qualities set to low doesn't affect anything, except when anti-aliasing is off, there is a semi-transparent white block covering 1/4 of the screen at top left.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21161
--- Comment #31 from Zachary J zakarjor@yahoo.com --- And just to be more clear, the latest wine did fix Witcher issue, so Still Life 2 issue must be different.

--- Comment #32 from Wylda wylda@volny.cz --- Same here under wine-1.9.21. I also have black stripes, but in different screens you can see different (non-black) "effects" + missing elements like red top of lab's glass.

Paul, did you try your patch for d3d8?
I am not sure what exactly do you mean? Did it break anything for you?
Or if you mean porting the patches for d3d8, the part which is important for this game is the second patch which concerns wined3d only. I made the first one right away mostly to bring the stateblock tests together. Yeah, the part of the 1st d3d9 patch can be ported to d3d8 (after testing that it is right thing to do there). But please note that d3d8 SetStreamSource does not have offset argument at all, so main issue concerned here is irrelevant for d3d8.
