--- Comment #1 from Gijs Vermeulen gijsvrm@gmail.com --- You have provided no information to work with.
1) What wine version are you using? (Please make sure to use at least the wine 3.x series) 2) Please read https://wiki.winehq.org/Bugs and attach the terminal output.

--- Comment #2 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- Hello,
I've tested The Sims 4 (Origin) and can confirm that the game crashes at startup (seconds after the EA logo animation starts).
This bug lacks information so I'll recycle it since there are already other bugs for different issues and this one is the oldest 'crash at start' bug not mentioning MSVCRT.
The game must be installed through EA Origin. I used the OriginThinSetup.exe legacy version and let it update (Origin 'About' says Version 10.5.40.26928 - 0). Origin seems to work fine for me.
The game was downloaded/installed fine. There was an error at the finalization step, but clicking on the 'finalize' button did work. I could launch the game and play for hours, then I closed the game and origin. Some hours later I loaded Origin again, without issue, but starting the game itself did fail.
So, the issue appeared on the second time I tried to start the game. The first time (continuing from the installation), I could play hours without issues or interruptions.

My setup: - Debian 8 Jessie 64-bit. - NVidia RTX2070 8GB VRAM + proprietary (non-debian) driver 430.14. - CPU Intel Core i7 4930K @3.14Ghz x12 (6x2 cores). - 32-bit wineprefix with 32-bit wine-staging 4.10 (Release tag). - Everything default in winecfg except: virtual desktop (1280x1024) + capture mouse in fullscreen apps + no WM management/decoration. - No winetricks, no DLL overrides, no registry edits.
Following the 'Origin' AppDB how-to advice: - I left 'Remember me' disabled on the Origin login window; - I disabled 'Origin In Game' in the Origin properties;
I'll collect other NEEDINFO bugs not related to identified issues to this bug. Please, if your issue is not this particular crash, refer to the other existing bugs: https://bugs.winehq.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=%22sims%204%22&list_id=6...

--- Comment #4 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- There is a trial version of The Sims 4. I filed the URL field with the link to it.
Unfortunately, the trial is tied to the origin account and it is a _one_ time 48h trial only. Accounts where the base game is already registered can't add the trial. It's unclear when the 48h timeout begins. It may be when adding the trial to the account, or starting the download, the install or to play. Once the trial is expired I don't think the same account can try it again.
That's why I didn't set the download keyword.

--- Comment #7 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- Hello,
Wine 5.5; Issue is still present.
- I tried several winetricks with no change: vcrun2013, d3dx9_43, quartz, devenum, ffdshow, wmv9vcm. - Same result with wine-staging 5.5.
Regards.

--- Comment #8 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- Hello,
I found the cause of my issue.
The application ships with python 3.7.
The init_sys_streams() function contains code that detects when output is redirected to a directory. The comments in the code says that the interpreter would crash if this is the case, so it exits early instead.
I've the habit to always redirect wine's output to a log file when testing applications. For some reason, init_sys_streams() thinks that the output is redirected to a directory and fails.
While testing the issue, I ran the executable without redirecting the terminal output and the application didn't crash.
So the workaround is to not redirect wine's output to a file.
However, I found a 'fix' that allows me to redirect the output to a file and have python be happy with it nonetheless:
The failing command is 'wine Origin.exe >>"$LOGFILE" 2>&1'.
I use this instead and it works: 'wine Origin.exe 2>&1 | cat - >"$LOGFILE"'
Marking INVALID (application bug and/or user mistake). If the OP's issue was different then, please check if your issue is not already reported and file a new bug if not.
Regards.

--- Comment #9 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello Olivier,
kudos to your own investigation but it's highly unlikely that Sofia's (OP) issue is the same as yours. Same applies to duplicates: bug 46561 and bug 47225
Anyway, there was no response from OP at all so I suggest we make this issue about your finding and for documentation purpose. I've adapted the ticket summary reflect your finding.
If there is still a user complaining about Sims 4 crashing I suggest to de-duplicate one of the dupes and reopen that one.
Regards
