A clean install of wine the following section in system.reg was missing.
Without this section wintricks fails with %ProgramFiles% could not be expanded.

I suspect this is invalid. Where did you get wine from? Does this occur in a
clean WINEPREFIX?

Well ... I deleted .wine and then tried:
wine notepad

which created a new .wine directory.

Something crashed while creating the prefix. Most likely a broken system
library.

Seems unlikely to still be a problem. Can you check in the latest Wine and
close if fixed?  Thanks.
