Bug #: 30817 Summary: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 Fails to Load After Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Upgrade (Wine 1.4x - 1.5.5) Product: Wine Version: 1.5.5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ubuntu@ozzyfrank.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 40356 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=40356 Backtrace for DVD Shrink 3.2 Failure to Load
As the title says, the final version of DVD Shrink (3.2.0.15) stopped working after upgrading my Ubuntu 64-bit system to 12.04. Wine was at v1.4x, then I manually upgraded to 1.5.2, to no avail. I was hoping the latest update to 1.5.5 might have fixed it, to no avail. I've attached a backtrace, so hopefully you can sort this out, as DVD Shrink was working fine until this upgrade (or at least relatively - I was used to having to shut it down after each disc before it crashed itself).

I've now upgraded Ubuntu to 12.10, and still no change - DVD Shrink is still dead. Not sure what killed it after so many years of working fine in Wine, but other programs like Mailwasher Pro and Adobe Photoshop are still working fine. I'll attach an up-to-date backtrace. Cheers.

The latest backtrace after upgrading Ubuntu to 12.10 and wine-1.5.15. Note that while it says "Platform: i386" my system is actually 64-bit.

Lots of users reported issues when Ubuntu 12.04 was released, since you were also affected after upgrading I have pointed you to that forum thread which discussed the ubuntu issue.
If you are able to build wine you could read http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30557#c18 and build wine without gstreamer support to check if this is the problem.

--- Comment #7 from OzzyFrank ubuntu@ozzyfrank.com 2012-11-04 21:44:50 CST --- OK, I had a fiddle in winecfg and got DVD Shrink to finally load, by specifying that winegstreamer load "Native (Windows)", even though the default was "Native then Builtin". However, when trying to get it to read a disc, it comes up with the error:
"DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Programming error - exception occurred"
... so is still, in effect, useless.

--- Comment #8 from OzzyFrank ubuntu@ozzyfrank.com 2012-11-04 22:22:48 CST --- Forgot to mention that I tried disabling Gstreamer in winecfg but DVD Shrink failed to load. Also, having gotten it to start via the above method, I can get it to open folders for shrinking (not, however, the VIDEO_TS folder on a DVD). I just tried "shrinking" a DVD title folder on my hard drive, and it seemed to go OK (it produced an ISO), though the folder in question had already been shrunk to DVD5 size beforehand.

--- Comment #9 from OzzyFrank ubuntu@ozzyfrank.com 2012-11-05 18:07:53 CST --- SUCCESS! I finally got DVD Shrink not only to load, but successfully shrink some discs. Thanks Mr. Jesus once again - I actually wasn't expecting a reply so quickly, so had trawled through those pages and figured out for myself that Gstreamer seemed to be the culprit (at least for a bunch of games out there).
I figured simply disabling Gstreamer should be enough, as recompiling Wine without it was a hassle I'd rather avoid (and should have the same effect anyway), but as mentioned it didn't seem to work. While "Native (Windows)" would get the program to load, even if it couldn't be used, disabling Gstreamer resulted in the app not loading at all. However, this was a global setting, which I wanted to avoid in case any Windows programs that worked fine needed it, so I changed that back to "Native then Builtin", and for DVDShrink.exe only I disabled it.
After that, it worked. So now I'm a happy guy again and don't need to boot into Windows (or run it virtually inside Ubuntu) just to back up my DVDs. Thanks once again.
