Bug #: 33729 Summary: Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix crashes at startup Product: Wine Version: 1.5.31 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: tiar85@luukku.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 44667 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=44667 Details for crash (single player).
Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix crashes at startup. It happens for both, single player and multiplayer executables. NoCD-patch did not help. Same with compatibility modes.
In AppDB, one of the users had found a workaround for SoF II multiplayer.

I can not get the game work with the guide. With it, on my PC, Wine only tries to run the multiplayer, but will never reach the main menu.
Closed bugs do not show a similar issue reported before. The game is also broken with Wine. 1.4.

The game uses the Quake 3 engine, and it hits bug #25362 on my system, so I have to set __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700. Not sure if that applies to the Ati proprietary drivers as well.

I happened to do the testing after updating my system. I got the demo working, and full version too, except Multiplayer took me back to desktop after showing the loading screen.
I checked later and noticed that Ubuntu update seemed to have installed buggy ATI drivers among other updates. The game was flickering badly, when I was able to run it, and native Linux games had the same issues.
I installed Catalyst 12.6 back (the last drivers which works correctly) and redid the tests. This time no luck. Crashes occured again. (I took a screenshot.)
__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=1770 gave no changes with both tests.
Also checked: Wine 1.6.0 was there, so it wasn't updated to the development version.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.37 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.37 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).

--- Comment #8 from Adam Bolte abolte@systemsaviour.com --- Tested 1.7.42 in a 32-bit prefix against Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix Gold Edition on Debian Wheezy (amd64) with the nvidia 346.47 drivers.
Confirming I can get to the main menu without a crash for both single and multi-player executables - but only if I run "export __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700" first.
Unless this is an ATI-specific bug, it appears to be fixed.

Yes, it's very likely that the OP was tripping in the same issue.
