Bug ID: 39560 Summary: Thief Gold - Black screen when going underwater and accessing inventory Product: Wine Version: 1.7.54 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: altiris28048@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 52708 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52708 Wine output when running the game and reproducing the bugs listed.
-Background Info- Thief Gold (with TFix patch) used to run exceptionally well (no issues/bugs/graphical errors) around September 18, 2015 on Arch Linux (with everything up to date, so I was using whatever wine and mesa versions were available at the time). I went on a hiatus from playing the game until yesterday (I still used my system and updated to the newer releases of things like wine and mesa, etc) and now whenever my character goes underwater the screen turns black, and when I try accessing the inventory it turns black also.
-Bug- When going underwater my screen will turn black, if I surface back on top of the water the game appears normal (this will continue). If I try accessing my inventory, instead of the item showing the screen just turns black and it is impossible to get the game looking like it did before.
-What I have tried to do- I have tried reverting back to older versions of Wine AND mesa but the problem persists. I am begininng to wonder whether it is something like an xorg server update causing the problem, if that is possible.

--- Comment #1 from altiris28048@gmail.com --- Oh, I also wanted to provide some screenshots as examples. Here are two http://imgur.com/VTOeImX http://imgur.com/iGWkqur
The strange thing is that the screen turns black but the bubble/oxygen texture is fine.

--- Comment #2 from altiris28048@gmail.com --- I am sorry for commenting again but I just realized I did not post my specs. I am using an AMD 7950 with the RadeonSI drivers with Mesa 11.0.4.

--- Comment #3 from Matteo Bruni matteo.mystral@gmail.com --- Is it possible that you set the OffscreenRenderingMode registry key to "backbuffer" since the last time you played the game? In any case, if that is set please drop it.
What version of Wine did you go back to to retest? Try 1.7.50 or older if you haven't tried already.
BTW, next time please attach the screenshots to the bug instead of linking to an external site.

Hmm, I have used the setting "winetricks orm=backbuffer" to try to run another game, but that was a long time ago.....I think. I did run that command though at least once but not for trying to get this game working. If there is a way to ensure it is not using backbuffer please let me know. I do not know how to drop it. I tried wine-1.7.51 and wine-1.7.50. Wine-1.7.50 was available in Arch repos in August 28th, that is as far as I went as I began playing this game after August 28th (around September 18th and I was keeping Arch up to date) and the game worked fine.
ATM, I applied an HD Mod patch for this game and it "solved" the issue for now, textures are different but the issues I described in OP are not present. I wouldn't really call that saving the problem though.
I'll remember about attachments, sorry.
Thank you for your support btw!

It's stored in the OffscreenRenderingMode registry key, just delete it with regedit for example (look up http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys for the exact path.)

So I take Wine 1.7.50 is also broken for you?

Yeah, it sounds like the mod is a workaround for your issue somehow. That doesn't really help figuring out your problem though :/

--- Comment #7 from winetest@luukku.com --- Any update on this? Wine has published several new versions of itself since last report.

--- Comment #8 from altiris28048@gmail.com --- I believe the issue no longer occurs on newer wine versions, I believe I tried it on a release that came out in September of 2016 and it worked fine, it may have even been earlier than that! I completely forgot about this bug report I made!
