Have you tested it in Windows? Some applications require 16 bpp mode.

Yes I have. It works perfectly in 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit.

Judging by the component descriptions, I thought that it would either be a gdi
or DirectDraw issue.

did not rechecked, but with these it worked for me some time ago (early 1.3.x,
nvidia 9500gt, driver 177.82):

Yes, "ClientSideWithRender"="N" does the trick. 
So the bug is with the handling of the XRender extension...

Still present in 1.3.29.  Setting "ClientSideWithRender"="N" as in comment 14
works for me.
