--- Comment #1 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-01-28 19:39:09 --- What distro / video card / video card driver?
Can you attach the console output?
Unless you're running Wine as root (you shouldn't) Wine cannot possibly lock up your machine. It's most likely caused by your graphics driver.

"I can not post the shell output due to the system locking up on me. No other games/apps lock on me due to the Nvidia GeFORCE FX 5200 graphics card that I am using. I believe it to be a wine problem since it used to work through wine way back and no longer does. I hope this helps you. Thanks.

Wine cannot lockup your system, unless you're running it as root. Most likely, the video drivers are buggy/mismatched to your kernel.
You can try running your program with: $ wine your_program.exe &> ~/gta_log.txt
And after regaining control of your system, ~/gta_log.txt should have the log up until the lockup.
Still, not a wine problem (the lockup that is).

Here's the log I was asked to make. Perhaps it will help and perhaps it will not.

--- Comment #5 from Joe goce_jeb@yahoo.com 2008-02-01 10:37:56 --- I posted my gta_log.txt as requested. I don't understand it though. Perhaps someone can let me know if it is a video card driver problem or if it is in fact wine? Thanks!

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-05-29 11:35:51 --- Are you running as root?
What video drivers?
What wine version worked, which doesn't?

--- Comment #8 from Sebastian H basti@heyno.de 2008-06-03 15:12:48 --- Hi I have had simmilar problems - I figured out another error message that would not be displayed when wine is running as user. When starting wine as root it said something like: cannot change depth from 24 to 16. I changed the default depth in my xorg.conf from 24 to 16 (who needs 24 bits for surfing the web) and now the game works like a charm even as user. I hope this helps closing this bug. BTW I run 1.0_rc3.

Exactly. Therefore I strongly encourage anyone, who got this bug, to try out the problematic game/app under windows xp. If the problem persists, Wine is innocent, just like in my case.

--- Comment #14 from Michael Valadez pfunkman82@yahoo.com 2008-07-21 14:07:35 --- I have tested it under windows XP and it does not give me any erorrs whatsoever. Unfortnately i am forced to play this game in windows due to this error.
Trying to call the bug invalid because of someone getting a similar error in a different game on a different operating system is assinine.
Stay on topic please this bug is for vice city not GTA3.

--- Comment #17 from Marcelo Juchem juchem@gmail.com 2011-02-12 12:04:48 CST --- There is a known Unhandled Exception issue at the Take Two KB: http://support.rockstargames.com/help/rockstar_games/unhandled_exception_err...
This is, like said above, probably not a Wine error.
