Bug ID: 42865 Summary: Battle.net: Crash on starting the application Product: Wine Version: 2.4 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: sworddragon2@aol.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 57970 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=57970 Terminal output
On starting Battle.net it starts after some seconds just its own crash reporter. This happens if the windows version is set to Windows 7 but changing it to Windows XP causes the application to work normally.

--- Comment #1 from Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dierick@piezo-forte.be --- Probably duplicate of bug 38960.
Battle.net use CEF internally to render web pages. There are issues with CEF in win7 mode.
You may either: - Use wine-staging (includes patch that makes CEF work in win7 mode); - Add the game executable to the application tab in winecfg and set it to Win7 mode, while leaving the global setting to WinXP for battle.net and other games; - Add battle.net.exe to the application tab in winecfg and set it to WinXP mode, while leaving the global setting to Win7 for other games and applications;

--- Comment #2 from Louis Lenders xerox_xerox2000@yahoo.co.uk --- Hi, since you haven`t provided a downloadlink I assume it`s the same program as from the downloadlink I added.
As Olivier already stated, use Staging for now to get this running; the login-window comes up fine using Staging This is really a duplicate of bug 42014

--- Comment #4 from sworddragon2@aol.com --- As a note: The launcher is for a short time visible before it crashes. Not sure if this was also the case at the time I have reported the issue.

--- Comment #5 from Lee Trager lt73@cs.drexel.edu --- Neither wine-staging nor setting Windows version for the Battle.net launcher to Windows XP or Windows 2003 fixes this. The launcher starts, shows the login window and crashes. Battle.net is completely unusable.

--- Comment #9 from PeterG peter.g.anderson@live.co.uk --- Which version of freetype is installed on your system? wine-2.8 was supposed to fix issues with freetype 2.8.x but I have'nt been able to confirm this yet.
Have you tried testing this using freetype-2.7.x and the lib32 freetype-2.7.x

wine-2.8 was supposed to fix issues with freetype 2.8.x
I think you mean Wine 2.18.
At least on my system Freetype 2.6.3 is installed. What makes you think this issue is related to Freetype?

--- Comment #11 from Amosar maxi.cass11@gmail.com --- On Linux mint the freetype version by default is 2.6 I have test with 2.7 and 2.8 and the launcher crash again

Yes, I did mean wine 2.18, apologies.
I have seen similar crash behaviour with freetype2 2.8, which is why I asked the question.
Have you tried installing in a new wineprefix using wine-staging? 2.17 or better should work without crashing. No overrides/dlls needed, just winetricks corefonts. It might be worth checking that you have the latest Blizzard App installer too.

Since Wine Staging 2.20 in Staging too... :( But, with Wine Staging 2.19 it's work perfectly for me. It's a new regression, I think.

I'm using 2.20 staging and when I create a new prefix and install the Battle.net app, everything works just fine for me. No overwrites and no winetricks, just installed it with a new prefix. (I'm using archlinux)

--- Comment #18 from Steve Soule sts33nvyb@gmail.com --- I did a binary search through the patches of wine-staging 2.20, and found which of its 440 patches fixes this bug: the patch kernel32-SetFileCompletionNotificationModes. This patch has one dependency: the patch ntdll-FileNameInformation. With just these two patches applied on top of vanilla wine 2.20, Battle.net works fine for me. Without this patch, Battle.net crashes on startup and gives its own crash reporting window.

--- Comment #19 from Steve Soule sts33nvyb@gmail.com --- I just tested again with wine 2.21 and wine-staging 2.21. As before, the patch kernel32-SetFileCompletionNotificationModes is necessary and sufficient to fix this problem for me.

Thanks for testing, let's mark it as a duplicate then.
