Enabling 3d acceleration in the game's configuration utility seems to fix the problem.
Confirming that this works for me. Use the OpenGL DirectDrawRenderer, then launch BGConfig.exe to turn on 3D.
I could not turn on 3D using the configuration screen in the game. After testing the configuration, I was unable to click "Okay" to save the new configuration.

--- Comment #4 from Alex Bradbury asb@asbradbury.org 2011-07-03 06:37:21 CDT --- Very similar artifacting is seen for Planescape Torment with ddr=opengl, which is also an Infinity Engine game. See discussion in bug #5535. If it is indeed the same problem, Stefan has a theory about the cause (see comment 74):
Yes. I think the problem is that wined3d can't read the color keyed surface contents back. The game backs up the old content of the backbuffer before it draws a sprite, and when it moves the sprite it draws the old contents back rather than redrawing everything.

--- Comment #5 from Goblinstomper@gmail.com 2012-07-26 17:42:17 CDT --- Both gdi and opengl seems to work in windowed mode in wine 1.5.9. gdi in fullscreen mode causes a segfault for me, but I suspect that's out of scope for this bug report.

gdi is deprecated. Works here in opengl on nvidia, marking fixed, thanks for testing.
