Summary: Hearts of Iron III Demo crashes due to unhandled page fault on write access Product: Wine Version: 1.1.27 Platform: PC URL: http://www.paradoxplaza.com//index.php?option=com_cont ent&task=view&id=442&Itemid=234 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: daniel.spies@fuceekay.com
Created an attachment (id=22997) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22997) Crashlog (page fault)
Hearts of Iron III Demo crashes due to unhandled page fault on write access after some minutes or up to two hours of gameplay. It's not caused by a special action in game. I cannot test this on the full version, I don't have one yet. See the crash log attached.
Tested on - Kubuntu 9.04 x86_64 - ATi hd2600xt

--- Comment #1 from Daniel daniel.spies@fuceekay.com 2009-08-11 09:50:16 --- oops, I just noticed the page fault also happens on read access. The crashlog attached is from read access, the last crash was from write access. Guess this is the same problem?

--- Comment #7 from Daniel Spies daniel.spies@fuceekay.com 2009-08-18 07:29:20 --- It seems this issue may be not an issue of WINE. Could someone with a ATI video card using fglrx give it a try and report if hoi3 crashes? Nvidia users seem not to have these crashes.

Seems to be same problem as Daniel Spies. As another note i have the game working fine on an older PC with the same linux setup (64bit Ubuntu 9.04 on EXT4), this older PC has a nVidia 7900GT graphics card.

--- Comment #10 from Daniel Spies daniel.spies@fuceekay.com 2009-09-03 01:41:36 --- How long did you run the game with the working machine? This seems to happen randomly for me. It might crash faster if I scroll in and out a lot using the mouse wheel. But at least I can run the game for a couple of minutes... Not sure if that may be the same issue.

Hi
I haven't run it for more than a minute - will have a proper go when 1.2 is out (hopefully in the next couple of days)

...still present in 1.3.32 ; the crash at "Map properly initialized" (or another crash just immediately before that point) seem somehow related to dsound. If you install directx9 and push the winelib override dsound=native, the background music replay may stop working but then this particular crash seems non-evident and the game loads/runs correctly - can anyone confirm this behavior? (evident in bothe the direct2drive and gamersgame releases)...

Please attach a trace as indicated at http://wiki.winehq.org/Sound (set dsound back to builtin for the trace).

...diabolical I tell you ... when one attaches debug as per link above, the program behavior alters and the crash point changes..in fact, the crashing becomes erratic in nature, and doesn't always manifest itself at the same moment in time...(as opposed to without debug attached, wherein it crashes reliably every single time at the same place) ....
...to further confound things, I noticed 1.3.33 was out, so I just compiled and installed same, and it seems that things have changed again. For some reason, a native dsound.dll refuses to load...(??)...but that aside, using the builtin dsound lib no longer seems to pull a crash where I described ; now the crash is beyond this point of loading, and happens further in trying to start an actual game (it threw a vcrun error on one crash)...
...I can still grab/attach a debuglog as described if you like, but I might blow things away, start fresh, and look at all this again with wine-1.3.33 to see where exactly things are...'now'... something's changed..
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19698
--- Comment #17 from Mr Nobody limited_choice@hotmail.com 2011-11-20 05:08:14 CST --- ...so much for that idea ; with wine-1.3.33 and using the debug channels as linked to above (with dsound=builtin), the game either hangs at the 'creating the world' screen (results in several gb of debuglog and will continue without a ^C), and unfortunately when it does crash at this point, it detaches right at the beginning of backtrace with a segfault....{sigh}...
...conversely and also, using a native dsound no longer proves to be an effective (or partial) workaround as it did before, the game gets further but does eventually crash - it does however catch a segfault backtrace when wine bails ... if anyone wants that log, let me know...
...I'll keep poking at it with a builtin dsound to try get something useful from it...

...thanks for the pointer -- it doesn't actually resolve the issue at all, but it *doea* have the effect of letting the debug trace spool out without detaching, with dsound set to builtin, which is likely close enough to what Austin asked for ... I'll attach that in the next few minutes -- thanks again

--- Comment #20 from Mr Nobody limited_choice@hotmail.com 2011-11-21 01:46:21 CST --- Created attachment 37561 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=37561 trace of HoI3 crash - wine-1.3.33
...the attached (expurgated) being the output of ;
WINEDEBUG=+tid,+mmdevapi,+winmm,+midi,+dsound,+dmusic,+mci,+alsa wine hoi3game.exe &> hoi3-builtin-dsound.log
..which actually represents starting the game, getting through the loading/menu selection screens, and then starting an actual scenario. The crash point is just after the main game window is displayed, at which stage the graphics would appear to be frozen & not accepting mouse/keyboard input of any kind...shortly thereafter we crash...
..this is my older (C)LFS build running linux-2.6.34 & plain alsa for audio ; I can recreate this on a more recent (Debian 6) box if need be...
'winetricks dsoundbug9612' was set for this run (without such, process detaches and doesn't capture backtrace to log)
'winetricks d3dx9_35' was set for this run (without such, game never progresses beyond the 'Creating the world' loadscreen)
