Summary: Wine fails to "Run" Leisure Suite Larry 7 after install Product: Wine Version: 0.9.46. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wegmethaat@yahoo.com
Created an attachment (id=8359) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8359) terminal output of failed run
I've followed the "HOWTO" on the page at winehq.org for Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail! (Windows 3.1/9x Version), but after the installation, the game won't run. I've done exactly what the "HOWTO" says, that is: I went to the CDROM directory with the game, ran AUTOPLAY.EXE using Wine, and selected "Run". The attached lsl7_0946.txt file shows the resulting terminal output of the failed run.

--- Comment #1 from Jeremiah Flerchinger flerchjj@ieee.org 2008-01-08 23:05:23 --- Apparently the windows version in the Wine configuration now needs to be set to "Windows 98". This should fix the problem.

--- Comment #2 from Jeremiah Flerchinger flerchjj@ieee.org 2008-01-08 23:21:05 --- Actually, setting the Wine Windows version in the configuration to Win 3.1, Win 95, or Win 98 should work in Wine 0.9.46. What version of Windows do you have Wine configured to run as?

Does it run on windows 2000/XP (actual windows, not wine setting)?

I believe I remember it working in Win 2000/XP. It works with every other setting, so I don't see a problem. I think the person running the app in Wine just had the Wine version of Win set incorrectly.
I don't see this bug as a real issue and don't see it being worth working on. The app can run just by following the install instructions, which includes changing 1 value in the Wine configuration.

If it works in Windows 2000/XP, then it should work in wine when emulating those O/S's. If not, this is a wine bug.

It's still an issue, just a minor one, since there is a very easy workaround.

Found an old note that leads me to believe it had to be run in compatibility mode for 2000/XP (actual MS Windows, not wine setting). That makes me think behavior is exactly the same as with MS Win OSes. I can't easily test this anymore, since it's been a couple years since I've had MS Windows on a computer.

--- Comment #7 from Nick Boughton nicholasboughton@googlemail.com 2008-08-13 07:46:36 --- Followed the Howto to the letter but when I run autoplay.exe it claims that the game is not installed, tried to run sierw5.exe directly but then it told me the CD was missing (running game from a folder).
System: Ubuntu 8.04.1 Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux Wine Version: 1.1.2

--- Comment #8 from Jeremiah Flerchinger flerchjj@ieee.org 2008-09-08 15:22:55 --- I can confirm that autoplay.exe no longer gives the option to play on Wine 1.1.4, and that sierw5.exe on the CD does not work either. It should work if you use it from the hard drive. It should be at the following path:
"~/.wine/drive_c/SIERRA/LSL7/sierw5.exe"
Hope that helps

I'm going to attempt to run it in a simple window manager rather than using gnome as I suspect gnome is interfering. I'm also going to double check the audio settings on wine to see if I've screwed that up.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9872
--- Comment #11 from Jeremiah Flerchinger flerchjj@ieee.org 2008-09-09 17:45:22 --- Nick, I don't think gnome should be an issue. I myself was using gnome, although with a theme with not nearly as much eye candy.
It looks like you are running Rythmbox and a bunch of audio plugins that I can't identify at the same time... try closing them all first, since it is an Alsa audio error. We could see where that takes us.
It may be helpful to see more of what the terminal says. Unfortunately it's obscured by the Wine window.

--- Comment #12 from Mauro Giachero mauro.giachero@gmail.com 2008-10-12 06:53:17 --- Nick, I also had your problem, and fixed it by hand setting useDirectSound=true in RESOURCE.WIN (line 18). BTW, the game installs and runs just fine in WinXP mode after this tweak using Wine 1.1.5. Mauro

--- Comment #14 from Mauro Giachero mauro.giachero@gmail.com 2009-04-17 13:11:27 --- It is.
Installed twice on clean prefixes, using the Win98 and the default (XP? not shown in winecfg here) Windows settings. The autorun program only offers an exit option. Starting the installer directly (setup.exe) the game installs correctly. Starting it results in a crash in XP mode (with comments #9 and #10 results), while in Win98 mode I get endless #9-like messages (but no crash).
Hand-editing RESOURCE.WIN like I suggested in comment #12 fixed both scenarios.

I had the same problem and solved it by starting the game using the autorun.exe from the cd instead of the sierw5.exe from the installation path.

--- Comment #20 from Mauro Giachero mauro.giachero@gmail.com 2011-04-10 05:31:21 CDT --- Just tried 1.3.17 in Win98 and WinXP modes. In both modes the autorun program has all buttons but "Exit" disabled. The game installs fine (with errors about not being able to create the program group icons) after starting the setup manually. In Win98 mode the game starts just fine. In WinXP mode the game crashes (Unhandled privileged instruction) unless I set useDirectSound=true (see comment 12).
