Summary: PAF5 throws exception after canceling print from help viewer Product: Wine Version: 1.3.17 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rmriches@ieee.org
Created an attachment (id=33920) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=33920) stdout/stderr showing the exception
The application, Personal Ancestral File 5 (PAF5), is downloadable--with registration depending on how you get to the download page.
An exception is thrown and the application basically locks up after canceling a print command from the application's help viewer. In bug #25873, Erich Hoover asked to be CCed on this new report.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Start PAF5. 2. Select 'New' from the dialog (or the menu bar if you don't see a dialog). 3. Click on the yellow question mark on the right-hand end of the menu bar. This brings up the help viewer. 4. Click on 'Print'. 5. In the print dialog, click on 'Cancel'. 6. Back in the help viewer, click on a couple of chapter titles in the left-hand pane. 7. Observe that the help viewer and application have become unresponsive and that an exception has been printed to stdout/stderr. I'll try to attach the log.

--- Comment #1 from Robert Riches rmriches@ieee.org 2011-04-03 19:44:01 CDT --- Addendum to instructions: Between selecting 'New' and clicking on the yellow question mark, just click on 'Cancel' on all the dialogs.

--- Comment #2 from Erich Hoover ehoover@mines.edu 2011-06-17 10:05:42 CDT --- Sorry it's taken me so long to comment on this, I've been a bit busy lately. Anyway, a while back I tried to see if this was specific to the HTML help component or a "browser-wide" issue and discovered that you can easily replicate the problem in Wine's IE (retested with Wine 1.3.22):
1) Run "wine iexplore" 2) Wait for http://www.winehq.org/ to finish loading 3) Click the "Print" toolbar button 4) Click the "Cancel" button 5) Attempt to click any link on the Wine website (nothing will work)
I hope that helps!

I took a look at this a little bit a while back. Unfortunately, I think we'd need Jacek Caban's help to get this fixed, as it appears that the problem is somewhere in wine-gecko.

Note: I say "unfortunately" because there are clearly more important bugs than this small issue that Jacek has been working on.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Is this still an issue in current (1.7.35 or newer) wine? If so, please attach terminal output.

--- Comment #7 from Erich Hoover erich.e.hoover@gmail.com --- Created attachment 50589 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=50589 iexplore print cancel log
Following procedure from comment #2: No exception, but the HTML interface is locked.

--- Comment #8 from Robert Riches rm.riches@jacob21819.net --- Thank you, Austin, for looking into this and Erich for attaching the terminal output. However, I would suggest you might want to direct your efforts elsewhere unless this is a useful test case for fixing a bug that affects other applications.
This application (PAF5) went unsupported by the vendor about July of 2013. The last time I did a full test on the application was on Feb. 23, 2014 with Wine version 1.7.13. I suspended maintenance of the AppDB page some time after Feb. 2014 with a note asking anyone who uses the application with Wine to leave a comment. Nobody has left a comment. I doubt any real users would see any benefit to an improvement in this application.

Given that it's reproducible in iexplore, it likely affects other applications.

--- Comment #10 from ocean04@suomi24.fi --- Affects all applications using mshtml to print.
Should be moved to wine-gecko, no reason to keep "unknown"
