Summary: PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (Polish language version) crashes on startup Product: Wine Version: 0.9.59. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: max.gilead@gmail.com
Hi!
Polish language version of PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=pl&FamilyID=..., size 27099144, MD5 sum 0f2cc7908333ecc2e53025ba4e86eed1) doesn't run on Wine 0.9.59 (installed from Wine repository) on Ubuntu Gutsy. Installation completes successfully but all I get after trying to run the app is:
$ wine Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Office/Office12/PPTVIEW.EXE fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x110000 1 (nil) 0 $
Btw, English language version (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=..., size 27024112, MD5 sum 9b4b476488674ae103d2e97cd88cd222) works fine.
Cheers, Max

--- Comment #1 from Tefnet developers developers@tefnet.pl 2008-04-18 08:56:22 --- Confirm...
It's looks like an installer error?
English version have directory:
Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/1033
Polish: Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/1045
if you rename it to 1033 it will work

--- Comment #2 from Max Gilead max.gilead@gmail.com 2008-04-18 09:02:57 --- jezier from #winehq on FreeNode suggested to rename Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/1045 directory to Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/1033. I don't know why it's necessary but after renaming the app runs fine.

--- Comment #4 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2008-04-18 12:33:39 --- 1033 is LANG_ENGLISH. 1045 is LANG_POLISH. I suspect your language settings aren't getting interpreted correctly. What's the LANG environment variable set to?

Actually I have unset LANG/LC_ALL, with Polish locale it works fine, but why it is based on locale, not on registry entries, etc?
I think it is possible to install Polish Power Point Viewer in English Windows (I can check it on Monday)

--- Comment #6 from Max Gilead max.gilead@gmail.com 2008-04-18 14:43:05 --- My LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8. I agree with jezier that it should work regardless of this setting. I'll try to verify it on English Vista.

--- Comment #7 from Tefnet developers developers@tefnet.pl 2008-04-21 04:27:01 --- I've checked on English version of WinXP Pro and... I can't run Polish PowerPoint Viewer:P
So it looks like it is not a bug.
But it would be great if wine could notice user about it in some way... (even if Windows exits silently)

--- Comment #8 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-21 12:11:49 --- Have you tried setting your locale to Polish and running the installer (as well as installing in Polish windows)?

Have you tried setting your locale to Polish and running the installer (as well as installing in Polish windows)?
as I said in comment #5 it works in wine with proper locale - so Polish PPV works with Polish locale and English PPV works with English locale.
I tried Polish PPV in English Windows and it doesn't work. I can try English PPV in Polish Windows if you want me to... but we can predict what will happen...
As I said in comment #7 Wine behavior is similar to Windows behavior. However I think we can do better than Windows and don't quit silently but inform user about issue.

--- Comment #10 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-21 15:26:24 --- While it would be nice to improve on window's behavior, we don't want to break anything in the process, and for that matter, there are more important fish to fry at the moment.
Invalid?

I don't want to change behavior... but it would be nice to have warn in console about it... otherwise we might have more bug reports like that...
anyway... it is invalid...

At least that it can't find dll in directory. And if we know that path is based on locale warn about it too.

At least that it can't find dll in directory.
Wine does print a message if it can't find a library an executable being loaded depends on. If Wine starts issuing warnings for every failed LoadLibrary call that would add a lot of confusion without any real improvement.
And if we know that path is based on locale warn about it too.
You know it only for this particular case, we can't assume that every path with 1033 or 1045 in it will cause the trouble.

yes, that's true
And if we know that path is based on locale warn about it too.

I haven't checked source yet but we got 1033 or 1045 from somewhere, so I think we know that path is based on locale or not... but I might be wrong

That comes from PPV itself, not wine.
