Through steam and crossover we have been successfully playing age of empires on my Mac for the past 2 months until yesterday, when a message appears blocking the program

Issues in a single application are severity 'normal'. Read more about severity levels descriptions there: https://wiki.winehq.org/Bugs#severity
Wine 4.2 is several months old. Please retest with recent wine-devel/wine-staging (preferably not 5.10-5.11, use 5.9 or 5.12 instead).
If the issue is still present:
Please attach a normal (=without WINEDEBUG) terminal output. Instructions to get a log can be found there: https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log
Please at least tell exactly when, from launching the Steam client to launching Age of Empires, the message appears.
Also please specify if anything has changed on your Mac to your knowledge between the last time you played and the issue (system, driver or application updates).
