Summary: [Close Combat Iv][CC4] All versions fail to launch Product: Wine Version: 1.1.25 Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://download.cnet.com/Close-Combat-IV-Battle-of-the -Bulge/3000-7483_4-10034642.html OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: nugrud@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=22185) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22185) WINE's output from launching unpatched retail full game of CC4
Be it a demo, full retail version and fully patched game of Close Combat IV fail to launch under wine. In the demo and full patched version the Windows dialog boxes appear:
"Close Combat encountered an internal error at address [here addres] and will now exit. Game version: [here version]"
The cd retail version crashes wine without any such dialog (wine output attached).
To reproduce the bug with demo install it and run 'wine CC4.exe'.

--- Comment #1 from Dawid Hanak nugrud@gmail.com 2009-07-04 13:39:30 --- Forgot to mention demo and patched game do not crash wine, they just show that dialog and quit. They are known to not work in windows nt4 and the game is adviced to run in win98 mode in vista, but setting wine winver to win98 does not help.

? In my attachment it is: 00000008 (D) Z:\usr\local\games\cc4\CC4.exe
You meant "" was missing? I think it's not, the installation went all fine.

Not necessarily. The user could've chosen that directory when installing.

Please remove ~/.wine, install the app again with default path, and attach the console output.
Done, retail cd version crashes wine in the same way, demo and patched game still do fail to launch with internal error.

The screenshots of internal error message box from demo and patched games. When those appear wine does not crash and the output is rather empty (only "fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW...stub!).

--- Comment #8 from Dawid Hanak nugrud@gmail.com 2009-07-12 06:37:44 --- In the readme of the newest version of games we can read:
"Recommended for Windows 95 or Windows 98."
"F) WINDOWS NT AND WINDOWS 2000
It is recommended that you not try playing Close Combat IV on any version of Windows NT.
You can play Close Combat IV using any beta version of Windows 2000 but you may encounter problems playing the game on Win2000. The game was tested on every beta version of Windows 2000 available at shipping time; however, we will not be able to help you resolve any problems you encounter."
As already said setting winver of wine to win98 or win95 does not help, but I think the root problem here is indeed an incompability of this old game with winxp.

--- Comment #9 from Jan Simek jsimek.cz@gmail.com 2009-10-22 03:10:11 --- You will NOT ENCOUNTER this bug if you check "Emulate Wine Desktop" in winecfg under Screen tab. I am going to update this game's appdb entry and add a small HOWTO.
Hmmm, now I wonder how is it possible to mark this as the lowest priority (P5) bug...

That would suggest you don't have the correct modes setup in xorg if it crashes/doesn't work without the virtual desktop. Check the output of xrandr and compare it to the resolution that is set with the virtual desktop. (use xwininfo or something to get the window size if you can't guess it)

--- Comment #12 from Dawid Hanak nugrud@gmail.com 2009-10-22 06:47:09 --- Well in demo it works, but in full game (2000.2.10.1) after flash of loading screen the new error message box appears "Unable to open file for streaming" and than internal error at address 0x0, i guess whole different issue.

Hi Dawid. It's probably the same error as in Close Combat III. The problem is that the game cannot play video sequences. I am going to have a look at it and update the HOWTO for the full game tomorrow. The fix would be going to registry and changing the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Strategic Simulations Inc./Close Combat/PlayVideos to "00 00 00 00" or something like that.
