Summary: SimCity 4 (including Rush Hour/Deluxe) fails to start Product: Wine Version: 1.1.31 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: tgheretford@googlemail.com
When I start SimCity 4 (or Rush Hour/Deluxe), Wine fails to start the program, drops back to a command prompt and kills the wineserver. This error occurs when I installed previous versions of Wine (prior to which I used a clean Wine directory to test), even versions from six months ago which worked then, so I don't think this is a regression.
Using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala beta with Wine 1.1.31 Jaunty from the Wine repository.

I'm hoping my last attachment is what you are after (although from what I can see, it doesn't show much, if anything). If not, I may have to be guided on this one...

I've tried this, but the program crashes so fast, I can't get a backtrace. Not even Sonic the Hedgehog could get one!

Adding the xorg-edgers PPA and updating hasn't worked for me.

--- Comment #15 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2009-10-17 16:15:15 --- If you attaching compressed _single_ file don't use tar. Just compress it with gzip. It's a hassle to deal with tarball for no good reason.
Before you do anything else make sure you have Wine debug symbols installed. If not, you'll have to compile Wine from source.
If there are any .mdmp files in this dirctory: C:\users\sonic\My Documents\SimCity 4\Exception Reports
run 'winedbg <file.mdmp> and attach (as a text file) output of terminal. Then remove all files from above directory and attach WINEDEBUG=+relay,+tid,+seh trace.

After some searching, unfortunately not for the Windows version.

Make sure you have a clean wineprefix and that you install SimCity 4 correctly.

--- Comment #24 from Gareth tgheretford@googlemail.com 2009-10-19 16:14:08 --- Purged wine, deleted the .wine directory, deleted the SimCity 4 directory, started completely afresh, reinstalled SimCity 4 (original) without a problem, it will not run, instead popping up a dialog box telling me that it would run in software mode on next run, every time I tried to run the program, regardless of whatever switches were passed on the command line. Rush Hour reinstalled fine, but just completely refuses to run.
I'm at a loss, short of a complete reinstall of Kubuntu.

I always install 64-bit Kubuntu, although I suspect it may work for other 64-bit users (need confirmation first). I'll reformat my whole hard disk (after backing up any data) and reinstall Kubuntu. I'll close this bug anyway, and reopen if needs be, particularly if this bug reoccurs in a fresh install of Kubuntu.

No, I don't think that is the reason why this isn't working.
I have completely formatted the whole hard disk (after backing-up!) which removed all configuration and any possible problems that could happen and I also reinstalled Kubuntu from scratch, and it still fails to load up. At least this time the splash screen for Rush Hour appeared before it failed to load and dropped me back to the command prompt.
