Summary: Morrowind: water plane z-buffer problem with pshaders Product: Wine Version: 1.1.2 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: liquid.acid@gmx.net CC: stefandoesinger@gmx.at
Having rendering issues with the water plane when pixelshaders are activated (I think the only thing that pshaders affect in Morrowind are the water plane).
Looks like some sort of z-buffer issue. Gonna attach screenshots. Using TSE3: Morrowind version 1.2.0722.
The issues are no there if pshaders are switched off. Everything tested in Seyda Neen so if you have to start a new game you don't have to travel far to see this bug :)
Adding Stefan Dösinger since he is also CCed in this bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10120 And #10120 also has to do with the water plane, so maybe both are somehow connected...?!

--- Comment #10 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2008-10-19 17:18:19 --- Hi there,
I must have done some mistakes when analyzing this bug. I'm currently running wine-1.1.6 and the issue is still there. BUT switching pshader water off does NOT fix it.
So I went back to wine-1.1.2 and checked there again. I can now also reproduce the issue with pshader water off. I also tried some combination of GLSL=off/on and ORM=fbo/backbuffer, but that doesn't change the situation.
I therefore have updated the summary. I can also see the issue for other objects (not only the waterplane) but also houses, etc. Please note that the issue also affects geometry with small distance to the player's viewpoint.
So climbing on top of the Seyda Neen lighthouse is optional, I can confirm the issue even when staying on the ground.

--- Comment #16 from Mehdi Yousfi-Monod mehdi.yousfi@gmail.com 2009-03-31 20:07:43 --- It seems I have the same or a similar bug.
I can see Z-fightings on many places in the game. It can be water, doors, windows. More bothering on NPCs (and also on me when in 3rd person view), where Z-fightings cause texture to blink. Mainly on articulations. The closer I am from them, the lesser I see this bug. From a far distance, even the whole head is blinking.
I also noticed this bug on Cedega versions from 6.1.1 to 7.1.1 (last one currently). However the bug disappear with Cedega 6.1.0. And the game simply doesn't run with versions below 6.1.0.
I tried playing with Wine Direct 3D registry keys and with NVIDIA X Server settings without success.
Config: Wine 1.1.18, Ubuntu Intrepid 64, Morrowind GOTY (French), laptop Sager NP2096 / GPU NVidia 9600M GT, drivers x86_64-180.44 / CPU Intel P9600

--- Comment #18 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-06-17 17:39:13 --- I can no longer test this since my new mainboard doesn't have a AGP slot anymore and the FX5900 was an AGP card. The issue doesn't occur on my Radeon HD3200, so probably it's either hardware or driver dependant. I'm going to get a lowcost NV card in the next weeks, so I can continue to track the issue there.

--- Comment #21 from Kol kol@MV8660.spb.edu 2009-11-28 21:33:41 --- More accurately, Cedega has this bug #14633 (waterplane above terrain), but never shows bug #17927 (texture flickering) also connected with z-buffer precision.

More accurately, Cedega has this bug #14633 (waterplane above terrain), but never shows bug #17927 (texture flickering) also connected with z-buffer precision.
I see the flickering textures in cedega all the time. They only occur outside but I see them in areas that don't have any water and I see them a lot with NPC's hair. I get the exact same problems in both cedega and wine.

Cedega is of no interest here. Please test with Wine and mention the version of Wine you've last tested with.
Cedega was mentioned because of a belief that the bug is related to the Nvidia drivers. Obviously nobody expects anyone here to offer solutions for Cedega issues. It was simply to establish that the same issues occur there in engines that previously worked and that the problem began with the same thing that triggered it in Wine being the Nvidia driver update. The comments were for the benefit of this ticket in relation to Wine.

The z-fighting begins at cells far out of the zero point in exterior cells. tested on wine 1.1.34, 1.1.35 and 1.1.36.
I will test it on crossover games to see what happens there.

--- Comment #27 from Knef dopoknef@gmail.com 2010-02-06 05:27:01 --- Same problem here. I have Ubuntu Karmic 64bit, and an Nvidia 8800GTS graphic card with the 185.18.36 driver. I have been trying to play Morrowind in Wine on this computer since Intrepid, and the flickering has always been present.
I am under the impression that this glitch disappears if I disable the Nvidia driver before playing, but the resulting performance is so slow that the game is unplayable anyway.
