Summary: Cannot launch EVE Online Product: Wine Version: 1.1.9 Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVE_Premium_Setup_70124.exe OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: volvic2002@online.ms
Created an attachment (id=17415) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17415) Black screen with EVE mouse pointer
I just installed wine on a new Ubuntu 8.10 using the package from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt. I used the http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/install-wine-deps.sh script to install all dependencies. Then I downloaded the current EVE premium client (version=5.20 build=70124 - Quantum Rise 1.0.1) and installed it. Everything worked fine. When I start EVE.exe ("wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe") the spash screen is being shown but all I got after the slapsh screen is a black screen where I can move my eve mouse pointer (see screenshot), nothing else will happen after that point.

A workaround (if that's indeed your problem) is here:

--- Comment #4 from volvic2002@online.ms 2008-11-27 12:58:05 --- @Francesco:
unfortunately it doesn't seem solve the problem if I just impose a lot of load during the startup of eve.exe. I tried the script posted in the bug report you linked but no success.
@Austin: It would be helpful if you'd be more specific instead of posting no real information. Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses.

Though reading the whole thing will likely prevent other errors/problems.

--- Comment #6 from volvic2002@online.ms 2008-11-27 14:08:23 --- Thank you for clarifying this, but I already read through this FAQ entirely. Eve does not seem to be dependant on the current directory so it makes no difference (in terms of the problem described) how I start it, may it be from the very directory, by the desktop link that was created during installation process or by something like env WINEPREFIX="/home/<username>/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe". It just freezes after switching to the black screen after the splash.

Eve isn't dependent on it, but many apps are. I said it just in case/as future advice.

Using an older wine version worked for me.
Which would imply a regression. Run a regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

--- Comment #13 from Charles Bucket cbucket1@yewess.us 2009-03-30 19:36:33 --- I was getting these exact error messages as well under Fedora 10 with wine-1.1.15-1 and an nVidia GeForce 8 series card. After upgrading to the 180.44 nVidia driver the messages still appear, but I now get to the splash screen.

I had the same problem initially. However, it want away after installing a native d3dx9_36.dll, and setting up the appropriate override.

I did the test again with 1.1.20, with .wine clean directory, and all work perfect, no external or native dll are required....
Fly safe...
