Summary: Command & Conquer: Generals works when run with winedbg but not with wine Product: Wine Version: 0.9.60 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: djones9960@gmail.com
Well, the summary says it all really.
The game hangs after the splash screen when run with the wine executable (I found I couldn't even ctrl-c out in the terminal window) but when run with winedbg I found I could just wait for the wine-dbg prompt to appear and type 'quit' and the game would run normally (except for the cursor)

Not major.

No it doesn't have the problem. (the demo isn't available from the link you posted, BTW)
I've found it also doesn't happen if you download the cracked version of the .exe either. The copy protection would appear to be where the error lies (as I'm sure you suspected).

What protection does it use?
According to gamecopyworld, it uses safedisc v2.
This makes sense since Battlefield 1942 (which came in the same gamespack as C&CG) uses the same protection (BF1942 works without any need for cracking)

--- Comment #5 from Keith kj.allcock@virgin.net 2008-06-02 13:48:01 --- I have just installed this and have exactly the same response. Start with winedbg and quit out and the game works (but with no cursor). I can't get it to run any other way.

--- Comment #6 from Dan Jones djones9960@gmail.com 2008-06-05 03:39:21 --- It suspect this to be hardware-specific. I've installed the game on my older single-core AMD64 machine and it doesn't work at all, either with Wine or Winedbg.
I may try later with an AthlonXP machine I have, and do a backtrace on all three to try and see what on Earth is going on. Maybe the errorcodes given by CD/DVD drives are non-standard (I believe non-readable parts of the disk are what safedisc relies on)

Also, I'm noticing that on the first China mission (and the training mission), plus the GLA mission #3 I'm getting the game quitting out with:
fixme:d3d:state_zfunc D3DCMP_NOTEQUAL and D3DCMP_EQUAL do not work correctly yet
What's been done with the cursors is cool though :)

What the hell am I supposed to do then? The question (within this bug) was about whether this bug is still relevant with the current version of wine, and it is.

You add a comment, saying "yes, I have tested it with x and it is still present".

Running Generals off "Command and Conquer: The First Decade" under 1.1.35 crashes at the splash screen, while running and quitting winedbg crashes at a second splash screen. So whatever is causing the difference in behaviour seems to still be there.

long time now answer, marking abandoned. The copy protection should work. Reopen if still a problem with recent Wine version.
