Some discussion of this issue here:

This is a long standing issue that occurs using the Compiz window manager.
Easy enough to trigger.
1. Open table and be seated 2. Change workspace so you can no longer see the table, and wait for the application to alert you that its your turn. 3. Return to the workspace the table is supposed to be on and you will find it has disappeared.
The application is definitely still running, and the table window is definitely still active (you can here the alert sounds and cards being dealt)
When I came across this issue initially, it didn't occur when using metacity as a window manager.

--- Comment #3 from Carl G carl.gherardi@gmail.com 2009-07-14 01:29:34 --- Hi typ0w,
Multitabling with stacked windows is impossible with the option you mentioned being set.
Willing to test whatever you need here.

--- Comment #4 from typ0w gnihton@gmail.com 2009-07-14 01:45:20 --- Carl, i'm just using that workaround + the "Ctrl+9" tile tables to resize workaround to play on 4 tables in one workspace while doing my work, Imign and writing this comment in a second workspace. Not as great as stacked tables fullscreen i'll admit, but it's the best temp fix i know of for now.

--- Comment #7 from strider22 chris@priestdata.com 2010-06-20 22:48:23 --- I don't find that an alert is required. I simply change workspaces, usually accidentally by dragging a window and having my cursor cross the edge of the screen. When I go back to the workspace where wine is, the game table is gone immediately.
control 9 did work to bring it back. This is the first time I have tried that & it worked.

Is this still an issue with 1.7.4 or higher ?

--- Comment #10 from doubleplusungood@yandex.com --- This bug still exists as of 2014 and wine 1.7.10, or at least I have the problem. I am most definately not running Compiz. I run Arch Linux (3.12.6-1-ARCH) with Openbox (3.5.2) and not much else. I am using PlayOnLinux (4.2.2), though.
To replicate the bug, check "Popup window whenever user action is required" under advanced multitable options in the PokerStars Lobby, then sit down at a PokerStars table (can be play money) and place the table window over another window, like say Firefox. Now when it's your turn, the table will lower itself and "disappear" under the other window rather than raising itself. This also happens when you stack a PokerStars table over another one.

--- Comment #11 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Is this still an issue in current (1.7.36 or newer) wine? If so, please attach terminal output.

--- Comment #13 from doubleplusungood@yandex.com --- My problem is gone, but note that my problem was a bit different than what was reported by others. I must not have read carefully, or maybe I thought it was related. My problem was that table windows needing action were popping "under", instead of popping up. It now works perfectly.
Here is what I did for testing. Using Arch Linux with Gnome 3 (Antergos), I installed PokerStars in a fresh .wine directory. The default for PokerStars is to popup table windows when they need action, so I didn't need to change that option. Under Wine, PokerStars now pops up table windows needing actions, instead of dropping them to the bottom of the window stack. So, it is now working properly for me. I also tried changing to another Gnome workspace and waiting for a table window to need action and then going back. Table windows had still popped up properly. It doesn't matter whether the obscuring windows were other PokerStars tables or Firefox or something; the table window needing action still pops over the rest. But again, I'm not using compiz, and I never had a problem with windows truly disappearing from the face of the planet.
This is with wine 1.7.53-1 under Arch Linux 4.2.3-1. My Linux system also has q4wine 1.1_r2-1, wine-mono 4.5.6-1, wine_gecko 2.40-1, and winetricks 2015082, but I did not activate or install anything else in my new .wine directory.
