Summary: Game Hearts of Iron 2 crashes randomly Product: Wine Version: 1.1.11 Platform: Other OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: pawel.stolowski@wp.pl
Created an attachment (id=18323) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=18323) Crash messages (run the game two times)
The game Hearts of Iron 2 platinum release (contains "Doomsday" and "Armageddon" addons) crashes randomly. It happens mostly when zooming the map in/out and scrolling it, but it also happens spontaneously if you just leave the game running for a few minutes. I can easily reproduce the problem with "Barbarossa" scenario (playing German forces) - just zoom in/out & scroll the map a lot as soon as the game starts, until it crashes.
It always crashes with similar output, just register contents differ - see attachment.

--- Comment #1 from Philip Nilsson leffeman@gmail.com 2009-01-03 09:18:46 --- I find that the game crashes more easily if you have the "Use counters" option enabled.

I find that the game crashes more easily if you have the "Use counters" option enabled.
You're right. Moreover, I think it is actually related to "use counters" option. As soon as I set it, the game crashes. If it is set when the game is started, then it crashes when zooming/scrolling the map.
With "use counters" set to "off" the game runs fine for me (tested for 1-2 hours gameplay).
This is still a problem with wine-1.1.21.

I had similiar crash all the time when I zoomed out from smallest zoom, and use counters were set too. But I was able to bypass it .. just set in user.reg file: [Software\Wine\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
And as if I waved magic wand: crashes were gone. BTW I had those crashes in all wine wersions starting from 1.0(stable wersion) to present 1.1.23

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-03-11 17:21:06 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 8 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.1.40 or newer) wine?

Yes, exactly the same issues (crash when zooming and random crashes).
I configured the DirectDrawRenderer key with no success, using wine 1.1.41.

The crash still appears in wine 1.1.43 (dbg too). However, "winetricks d3dx9" combined with the DirectDrawRenderer fix seems to solve it for me.
Caveat: before purging wine and reinstalling it (file system purge, not just apt-get) I also saw the crash. There might be something in the winetricks toolbox that can provoke this with .43 too. I did a lot of stuff a few days ago to try to get Steam to survive for more than a few seconds at a time and one of the tweaks might've done something to harm HoI2.
Crash dump attached FWIW.

Does the crash happen with the demo
http://www.gamershell.com/download_7840.shtml
?
I can't get it to misbehave with Wine 1.2.3, even if I remove the entire subtree HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D. However, the demo looks quite a bit different than the game. The sizes of stacks are not shown in the Counter-view and only a very small subset of the map is used. Scrolling can never take the view away from the initial square. I don't know how accurate the demo is as test...
