Summary: Add .desktop shortcut files for winecfg and wine uninstaller Product: Wine Version: 1.3.15 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wooptoo@gmail.com
It would be nice if wine had .desktop shortcut files for "winecfg" and "wine uninstaller". These two are the most useful applications bundled with wine. This way users will know about them. Ubuntu has this by default and they are placed in the wine menu.
Also, a default icon for wine would be nice (placed in /usr/share/icons or /usr/share/pixmaps).

--- Comment #4 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-03-16 12:31:37 CDT --- This is the first I've heard of a distro declining to handle the icons. I see some discussion here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Desktop_Project

Well, we don't like making downstream changes, backports or other unintended things that aren't in upstream unless we have to because "upstream knows best".
Let's use this bug report for a discussion whether I should fix the Arch package to ship its own .desktop and .png icon files or whether upstream should bring them. I think wine should provide one or more .desktop and .png icon files for the set of programs the user should see by default. The suggested ones were winecfg, uninstaller, regedit, explorer.
If you don't want to make these changes upstream, please tell me. I will have to do them in the package, then. :(

--- Comment #6 from Damjan Jovanovic damjan.jov@gmail.com 2011-04-20 10:27:59 CDT --- +1 to doing this upstream. As the main author of winemenubuilder, I want Wine doing all desktop integration. Distros have already made a hash of things with their custom Wine menus: I've seen .desktop files lacking "StartupNotify=true" for progress indications, translations and icons that weren't synced up with upstream, files in funny places, etc. Plus the most valued Wine users - the developers - are getting punished for not installing a distro Wine package!
The less distros have to do, the less opportunity exists something will break, the easier packaging for them becomes, the more consistent the experience is for our users, and the better Wine's overall image becomes.
Archlinux: thank you, you have a very progressive policy.
