Bug ID: 37203 Summary: Age of Empires II Conquerors 800x600 launch screen black on wine versions later than 1.7.13 Product: Wine Version: 1.7.25 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: 0strodamus@cox.net
When launching Age of Empires II - The Conquerors using Wine versions later than 1.7.13, the initial 800x600 launch screen is black. Selections can still be made by blinding clicking.
I am using Wine on an up-to-date Arch Linux system, kernel version 3.16.1-1-ARCH. I was able to exactly replicate this behavior in Virtualbox using an up-to-date Arch Linux install and a new, empty wine prefix. Launching Age of Empires (non-Conquerors expansion) also launches with a black screen.
Downgrading from Wine version 1.7.25 to version 1.7.13 or earlier solves the issue. The game launches and runs flawlessly under version 1.7.13.

--- Comment #4 from Darrell 0strodamus@cox.net --- I don't know how to debug in Linux. I uploaded 2 terminal message logs, working and non-working. I have 2 strace logs, but they are too big to upload here or at pastebin.com.

--- Comment #5 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Someone else must look into this. But it's a bit weird it cannot open some audio related file. So you are most likely missing some file or it's not correctly linked or something like that.
When I have seen those sound underrun fixmes the audio has had some weird noices.
Also the card recognize code seem to need something...

--- Comment #6 from hanska2@luukku.com --- You could try if alt+tab into desktop and back could give picture (it does sometimes). Also if using virtual desktop.
Out of ideas currently. Do you use own compiled wine? if so you should try to look for the files it complains it cant open.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37203
--- Comment #7 from Darrell 0strodamus@cox.net --- The audio errors may be because I created the files in Virtualbox. My Virtualbox sound may not be set up correctly. Audio works fine on my real system - at least under Wine 1.7.13 (I can't start a game in 1.7.25 due to the black screen). Alt-tab provides no relief. I'm using the Arch distribution's version and do not compile myself. Thanks for having a look.

--- Comment #8 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Well you could try regression test.
http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
but you need to build wine yourself. Which can be a bit complicate to setup.
Regression test would give more clear answer what has been changed and what's most likely to cause the error.

--- Comment #9 from Darrell 0strodamus@cox.net --- I looked through the Regression testing documentation, but I'm afraid I'm still too new at Linux to proceed. I'm not giving up though! Also, the latest Wine 1.7.26-1 still exhibits the same black screen behavior. I updated the version in this bug report.

I can confirm bug exists in Wine 1.7.43 here.

--- Comment #11 from Darrell 0strodamus@cox.net --- I've tried every Arch Linux release up until 1.7.43 too and they all have the same issue. wine-stable-1.6.2 from the AUR works fine.

Have you tried 1.7.13? I managed to get that version working using Arch Time Machine's archive.
If you have the time, it would be beneficial to try regression testing against that version. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

Edit: Nvm, I guess you must have used that version. I would regression between 1.7.13 / 1.7.14 myself, but my internet is dead slow. :P

--- Comment #14 from felix moreno info@justdust.es --- I tried with 1.7.38 and it works fine in 800x600, probably is a graphic card issue, maybe this resolution is not supported, or maybe is a problem with nvidia dirvers (it happened to me in the past using propietary drivers to have this black screen). But I confirm that i can play wit mi intel + prime drivers at 800x 600
