--- Comment #2 from Pavel Ondračka pavel.ondracka@gmail.com 2011-11-01 09:17:57 CDT --- I did try winetricks corefonts but it didn't help, with corefonts there is no regression (all Wine versions are broken when winetricks corefonts is used).

That download is dead.
I just tested Mount and Blade, but I noticed that my version must be different from the comment 1 since I have no text with fire and sword. I don't know if there supposed to even be such tabs. But with wine and staging version 2.0rc3 I don't see such tabs.

Béla, does this still work after f59755755e90220ccb27db56e169401f509bb227 (e.g. wine-4.0-rc3 or later)?
No. Unfortunately, commit f59755755e90220ccb27db56e169401f509bb227 broke this again.
Installing Arial font family (or winetricks corefonts) is a workaround.

With 6.0-rc1/6.0-rc2, Mount and Blade looks the same as it did in https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28960#c5.
Do you have mscorefonts installed, maybe?

I can confirm this on my Arch Linux machine. I don't have mscorefonts installed on either machine. The difference may lie in the fact that I used the Mac Driver on my macOS machine instead of X11.

--- Comment #19 from Huw Davies huw.davies@physics.ox.ac.uk --- The dialogs in this app want the "Microsoft Sans Serif" truetype font (not to be confused with the "MS Sans Serif" bitmap font that Wine already includes). Since that font is generally not available on linux Wine will pick a replacement and that replacement may or may not have metrics that are close enough.
Microsoft Sans Serif is included with macOS which likely explains Gijs' results.
