Summary: Microsoft Word 2000 - some fonts are always bold Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ben@bristoll.com
In Microsoft Word 2000, for some fonts only, the "regular" style fonts (non-bolded) always appear as bolded in the document. These fonts appear to stay bolded, even when you toggle them between being bold or un-bolded. For some fonts, the italic style is also bolded (whether you make it bold or not), while for some fonts, the italic style is always un-bolded, whether you make it bold or not.
This is only happening with some fonts (Times New Roman, Garamond, Tahoma), while others work as they should (Arial, Courier New, Century Gothic, Bitsream Vera Sans).
This issue also seems to appear only in Word 2000. I do not see this problem in Excel 2000 or PowerPoint 2000 (using the same fonts that have this issue in Word 2000).
This issue first appeared for me in wine 0.9.53, and is still present in 0.9.54. When I revert to wine 0.9.46, the problem goes away (all fonts look as they should).
Please let me know if there is any more information that would be useful.

Wrong severity. Have you tried installing corefonts?
Do you mean the msttcorefonts? If so, I've had those installed all along, and just removed and re-installed them, and I still have this issue.

--- Comment #4 from Damon Brinson djb@damonbrinson.com 2008-02-17 20:14:56 --- I have the same problem with Word 2003 in Wine 0.9.54 on Kubuntu 7.10 (all pkgs current). Times New Roman is ALWAYS bold. (There's not even a "Normal" setting for that font in Wine, despite the presence of the non-bold, non-italic font.)
I installed Wine w/o incident via Adept Manager. Then, I installed MS Word in Wine via these instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=676345&highlight=wine+office.
I didn't have msttcorefonts installed at that point, but after seeing the perma-bold fonts in Word, installed that pkg to see if it would help (with x-ttcidfont-conf). No change.
I've deleted and reinstalled the Times New Roman font via Kubuntu's font management interface in System Settings. No change.
I've even installed the M$ Times New Roman TTFs from XP into Kubuntu. No change.
Very frustrating. Willing to try something else to help troubleshoot/resolve the problem. VERY interested in getting it fixed.

Have you tried copying the .ttf files for the affected fonts to the /.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory? That solved the problem for me.
I tried this and it worked. Perhaps there is a setting or somewhere where I can point Wine to use the fonts in my /usr/share/fonts directory in addition to the local fonts in drive_c?

--- Comment #10 from dimesio@earthlink.net 2008-04-04 23:33:33 --- The problem is still present in 0.9.59 for Word 2003 on OpenSUSE 10.3, with a clean wineprefix.
For some fonts simply copying the ttf file to the windows/fonts directory solves the problem. In other cases the problem seems to stem from having multiple versions of the same font face installed in windows/fonts--e.g., Arial and Arial Condensed. They are not really the same font, but Word 2003 seems to think they are. Deleting one of the "duplicate" font files solves the problem for some of these cases (though Word may then be unable to bold them). Neither Excel 2003 nor Powerpoint 2003 have this problem.

--- Comment #11 from hasi whynot@nurfuerspam.de 2008-04-05 11:15:05 --- I am using PlayOnLinux, and there it was required to copy the fonts also to the ".PlayOnLinux/fonts" and the ".PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Office2003/drive_c/windows/fonts" directories (or your corresponding directories). I noticed that the font names on my XP installation ("C:\WINDOWS\Fonts") were different than the font names in my wine font folders. Example: XP="timesbd.ttf", wine="Times_New_Roman_Bold.ttf". I simply copied over the fonts from XP to the wine/PlayOnLinux font folders and removed the old ones with the long names. That worked for me. What's the reason for the font names of different length in wine?
