Summary: Tray icons in Gnome's notification area are broken. Product: Wine Version: 0.9.55. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: shell32 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ohrn+wine@opera.com
Tray icons in the Gnome notification area are broken.
Instead of showing the correct tray icon an existing icon from a non-Windows utility is duplicated. Sometimes this duplicate dissapears and there is just a blank space in the notification area.
The tray icon does not respond to mouse clicks or other events so pop-up menus connected to the icon are not accessible.
I've tested this with several different Windows applications and they all exhibit the same behaviour.
I've also tested this with all Wine versions back to 0.9.52 and all have the same problem.
I'm using Fedora 8 and the Gnome notification about box shows version 2.20.2.

--- Comment #1 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-02-15 08:10:31 --- Please specify at least one program that has this problem. Preferably freely downloadable and small. I can't reproduce this with say Steam - it works fine for me.

--- Comment #2 from Fredrik Öhrn ohrn+wine@opera.com 2008-02-15 08:38:57 --- Here is some random small utility i found that exhibits the problem: Tray Commander Lite, http://www.ardamax.com/tcl/
Programs I use daily that doesn't work either are mIRC (www.mirc.com) and Proxomiton (www.proxomitron.info).

--- Comment #3 from Kirill K. Smirnov lich@math.spbu.ru 2008-02-15 09:33:10 --- VERY RARELY I observe the anomalies described above, but this is an exception than rule.
Please, check the 'taskmgr' utility which ships with wine (just use "wine taskmgr" to invoke it). Does it shows the same behaviour?

--- Comment #6 from Fredrik Öhrn ohrn+wine@opera.com 2008-02-28 13:48:30 --- I just installed a fresh Fedora 8 from DVD (on a new hd in the same computer) and noticed that the notification area about box says v2.20.1 before installing any updates. Out of curiosity I tried running some Windows apps and now tray icons work! They are displayed properly and any pop-up menu appears as expected.
Now I have 212 updated packages to install, I'll report back on what happens after the notification area has been updated to v2.20.2 again.

--- Comment #7 from Fredrik Öhrn ohrn+wine@opera.com 2008-02-29 04:23:42 --- OK, upgrading packages didn't break anything but I just figured out what does:
Installing nVidias binary display driver, enabling TwinView *and* setting TwinViewOrientaion to LeftOf breaks the tray icons.
With TwinView turned off or TwinViewOrientaion set to default (RightOf) tray icons work normally.
Apparently having the secondary monitor to the left confuses the tray icon adaptor. Weird!
