It's actually Wine's RichEdit making an awfully long run on M$ EULA. Use native override to quickly see the difference or use +richedit debug channel to watch the pain ;-)

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-09-11 02:08:21 --- I tried getting a +richedit log, but it ran for ~20 minutes without ending. Log is ~105 Mb, and compresses to 1.8Mb. If anyone wants to take a look at this, let me know and I'll e-mail you the log...or loan you the DVD...

--- Comment #9 from Ronny Standtke Ronny.Standtke@gmx.net 2010-10-13 08:28:10 CDT --- I just tested with wine 1.3.4 and it does not look *soooo* bad anymore. On my (very old P4 2.6 GHz) system it takes around 30 sec to render the EULA. Fixed?

--- Comment #10 from Shannon VanWagner shannon.vanwagner@gmail.com 2011-02-10 13:21:55 CST --- Appears to still present in wine-1.3.13-48-gae3e768. Tested with office 2007 pro. The behavior for me is that after entering the product key, there is long pause (15 seconds or so) until I'm able to click on continue and see the resulting EULA screen. When I set *riched20 to native in winecfg, the problem goes away.

Correction: when I run winetricks riched20, the problem goes away. If I set riched20 to native without having run the winetricks, then it blocks me from entering a Product Key at all.

Is this still an issue in wine version 1.6-rc4 or higher or is this to be closed as abandoned ?

--- Comment #13 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2013-07-10 21:38:09 CDT --- In 1.6-rc4 on my system it takes about 4 seconds after entering the registration key in Office 2007 for the Continue button to become clickable. I wouldn't call that "very slow," but it is still slower than on Windows.

It's still slower than windows. I don't think it's worth marking fixed yet, at least without knowing what is slowing it down and that it's not fixable (e.g., OpenGL/D3D back and forth hurting D3D performance).

--- Comment #16 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2013-07-10 23:22:10 CDT --- True, but it's no longer the showstopper it was; it's almost down in the noise now.

I was going to downgrade the priority, but it's already at enhancement :)

--- Comment #18 from Dean Moore doghousedean@gmail.com 2013-12-06 04:54:26 CST --- I believe the problem still exists.
Once Office 2010 is installed, the key does take 4-5 seconds to confirm, the applications themselves periodically appear to pause, running top shows it is using 90+ % cpu.
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 25248 dean 20 0 1849m 254m 40m S 91.2 6.5 2:00.53 OUTLOOK.EXE
I have a sensible machine, i5 4GB ram, that handled outlook 2010 in windows fine.
Not sure I can help further other than to say the problem still exists.
PS: I have set riched20 to native in winetricks
