To reproduce:
1. Download the trial from Microsoft
2. Install it without customizing. The default install includes Outlook.
3. Try to run Word, Excel, or Powerpoint; the installer will start up while the
app is loading.
4. If you wait, the installer will eventually crash.

If Outlook is not installed, this does not happen.

For me setup runs even if I exclude Outlook.

I still have the wineprefix that I got to work by not installing Outlook, and
that one still works--Word, Excel, and Powerpoint all start up without
setup.exe starting. But now I'm unable to reproduce that in another wineprefix;
as you say, the installer starts even without Outlook installed. I'm not sure
what's going on.

Removing Outlook from the description. I managed to get another working
wineprefix, but that one does have Outlook installed. I'm still trying to
figure out what did get it working.

The filename it passes to FindFirstFileW has quotes, which makes the call fail.
It's taken
from the ModifyPath value of the uninstall key for the Office14.SingleImage
product,
which got an extra pair of double quotes for some reason.

If I remove them it doesn't reinstall feature "SetupXMLFiles" anymore, but it
does still 
reconfigure the product.

The things I've been doing are all ordinary user-level tweaks. I do routinely
disable winemenubuilder, but that alone isn't enough.

This bug may be invalid.

What I have found is that if the problem doesn't happen the first time I try to
run one of the apps after installing, it never happens in that wineprefix.
Working wineprefixes can be copied--at the moment I have several, most of them
created by copying one of the two that worked from the outset.

What I think may be the difference is that the working installs successfully
activated during the install process, and the non-working ones didn't.
Non-activated trial installs are supposed to have limited functionality, but
all program features have been available in my working wineprefixes, and the 30
days are almost up.

As a test, I copied the tokens.dat and cache.dat files from a working
wineprefix to a non-working one, and started Excel. I found that while
setup.exe did start the first time (and quickly crashed), Excel also opened
immediately, which it hadn't done before. The second time, setup did not start,
but Excel complained about being unable to validate and shut down. After that
the problem was gone (probably because the registry had finally been updated).

There may be a Wine bug in why activation works sometimes during installation 
and not others, but I suspect at least part of the reason may be that the
Microsoft server will refuse to activate after a number (not sure how many) of
attempts using the same product key.

Does any of that make any sense?

Still present in 1.3.22.

The trial installer currently available for download (X17-22376.exe) is not the
same as the one I tested last December (X16-32007.exe).

still present in current version (1.3.33) on ArchLinux (x86)

After some time it is starting (or after killing Setup.exe) - but than nothing
in word/$app can be klicked (cursor is a textcursor)

Yes, it's still present, but doesn't happen with every wineprefix.

The installer I'm now using is a slipstreamed version of Office Professional
Plus 2010 provided by my employer. It does not try to activate at all during
the install process, so my speculation in comment 6 about failed activation
being the cause was wrong.
