Summary: Poor graphics (black squares) observed using Many faces of Go program Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jmc@xisl.com
I am running "Many faces of Go" and the graphics are displayed horribly.
The fault can be observed in Wine 1.0-1 to the current version.
There is a patch given at http://www.smart-games.com/supportfaq.html under "How can I run version 12 on Linux or Mac OS?" which refers to http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.wine.devel/54403
I have tried this patch and it works without breaking anything else I've tried.
Please could this be incorporated.
Thank you.

--- Comment #1 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2009-03-29 17:13:11 --- Patch must be proved to be correct by adding tests. It won't be merged like this.

--- Comment #2 from John Collins jmc@xisl.com 2009-03-30 03:59:15 --- Fair enough but is there any way it could be looked at as this problem has existed for over a year?

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-10-01 15:09:51 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.30 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #4 from John Collins jmc@xisl.com 2009-10-20 12:07:17 --- I've just built wine-1.1.31 and run it on that and it still has the problem.

--- Comment #6 from jesse jessemichaelwilson@gmail.com 2010-03-09 19:51:15 --- The patch does not apply in current (1.1+ series) versions of wine. The status should be changed from unconfirmed, because the bug itself has been confirmed by multiple testers. Possible solutions: 1)forward port the patch and add tests. 2) write a new patch and tests. A wine mailing list posting I found on Gmane by the author of the patch claims he has added tests. If so, the tests could be forward ported as well. I've emailed the author at what I hoped would be a current mailing addres, and he has not responded after a week or more. Please regard this bug as confirmed, mark it as new, and begin the process of assigning it to someone.

This issue does still exist and the patch does still fix it. I have included an image which shows the graphics issue before the patch and how its supposed to look after the patch.
PLS FIX!
Thank you. -Charles

--- Comment #15 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- What are the steps to reproduce? I start the game accepting the default options and I'm presented with the go board. I then click randomly in the screen and black and white pieces appear without any problem, no broken line like in your screenshot. I'm using wine 1.9.12.
The board in your screenshot is bigger than mine so obviously you are using different settings in the game which could lead to the bug.

--- Comment #16 from charles bock charles@charlesbock.com --- Hey I think you're 100% right. I had 1.6.2 which is the most current version in the default Ubuntu repos.
After installing 1.9.12 from the wine-builds PPA it actually looks fine without any patching...
Very interesting!
Well please disregard my previous post and carry on I suppose :)

On Mac or Linux the graphics is bad, there are boxes around the stones.
This is a bug in Wine and other Windows emulators. Update 12.020 has new graphics code that avoids this bug. Upgrade to the latest release to fix this problem.
So maybe this Wine bug has not been fixed after all...

Indeed my version is 12.022. archive.org is currently down but when it comes back I'll try to get older versions and test again.

Ok, archive didn't help so I contacted the author and he is helping me get older versions to test. According to his changelog [1] we need a version <= 12.005.

--- Comment #23 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- I really believe this is fixed in Wine's side. I cannot reproduce the exact problem from comment 13 because I don't have Wine 1.0.x but I do see a graphical problem as the screenshot from my comment 21 in 1.2.3. So IMO this is really fixed.
According to some source code shared by the author the best component guess is gdi32.
