Summary: F.E.A.R : Crashes when sound is enabled Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc4 Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://www.whatisfear.com OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: taedium_vitae@eml.cc
Created an attachment (id=13770) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13770) Terminal output
Game crashes at certain points of the game when sound is enabled. The first time this is encountered is when selecting a menu option of the main menu.Sometimes you can get past this, but it will crash shortly after entering the first building, when you get control of the player. There is a workaround posted on the appdb page, however it doesn't work for me. The crashes don't occur when sound is disabled through winecfg, or through the game itself, however, because the driver of the car at the start of the game doesn't say anything, you get out of the car earlier which results in you being stuck inside/behind the rubbish bin and you can't move back to the other side.
Last few lines of terminal output are attached.I didn't post the entire log, as it comes out as a 2.8M file, and I have a slow upload speed. The preceding output is just the glDisable GL_FOG fixme, repeating over and over.

--- Comment #2 from DL taedium_vitae@eml.cc 2008-06-11 06:34:29 --- Okay, I seem to have figured out what is causing this.It seems the game is trying to connect to the internet for some reason, and is causing issues with wine. When I run fear with my internet connection down, fear runs fine and does not crash. As soon as I re-enable the connection, and relaunch fear, it crashes once again. Also after relauching the game after one of these crashes, I sometimes get a crash with a backtrace linked to "gamedatabase".To get the game to lauch again, I have to delete "/home/user/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/All\ Users/Documents/Monolith\ Productions/FEAR/Profiles/Profile000.gdb".This could be just the profile getting corrupted from the crash, or another issue.I have uploaded a log with the gamedatabase crash.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-12-11 10:42:18 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.10 or newer) wine?

I'm not sure yet.Game is now crashing before the car scene even occurs with wine 1.1.10, even with sound disabled and the network port for the internet connection brought down.I'll try reinstalling the game from scratch as soon as I can find the disc.

Please file a new bug for this. A regression test would help: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

--- Comment #7 from DL taedium_vitae@eml.cc 2008-12-27 23:07:24 --- Okay, it turns out that my firewall was causing problems with F.E.A.R trying to access it's update servers so that was the main cause of the crashes.WIth WMFADist.exe installed and firewall brought down, the game works fine.I'm pretty sure that I had tried with my firewall disabled in the past, so maybe the ability to connect to the update servers was fixed in a later version.
Game does still crash without WMFADist.exe though, so if that is considered a bug, this should be kept open.I've attached terminal output of FEAR running without WMFADist.exe installed.
