Summary: 1by1 Player version 1.74 freezes under normal use Product: Wine Version: 1.3.18 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: turbolad995@hotmail.co.uk
1by1 Player version 1.74 will freeze if you use almost any part of the program ONLY WHEN A MUSIC TRACK IS PLAYING. If you are NOT playing a music track, you can click on the toolbar buttons and close 1by1 Player without trouble.
Basically, 1by1 Player freezes only when playing a music track and trying to use the program. If you are not playing a track, you can use the program without it freezing. In Ubuntu, you have to "Force Quit" to get rid of 1by1 Player when it freezes.

There seems to be a recurring pattern here? Why has nobody confirmed this bug report? It's very easy to make 1by1 Player 1.74 crash in Wine, just by closing it or doing anything else when a music track is playing.

If you try to do anything else with 1by1 Player when the audio track is playing, 1by1 just generates the error message - see the attachment "Error when using 1by1 Player version 1.74".
You can't play another audio track - you can only play ONE from start to finish, and that's it.

I can't remember which version of Wine used to run 1by1 Player properly.
I added "regression" to this bug report because it's apparently the right thing to do - i.e. when a Windows program worked fine in an older version of Wine and stops working properly (or doesn't run at all) in a newer version of Wine. I wish I knew that when I first reported this bug.
As an end-user without the technical knowledge, I can't make any sense of how to run the regression test, it's overly complicated and I don't want to make things worse by getting it wrong!
Can someone else do it please? I can't.

I can't find where to download 1by1 Player version 1.74 instead? I definitely remember using 1by1 Player 1.74 in a previous version of Wine and it worked fine, with no crashes or anything. Shame, because it's a great music player that turns your music directories into playlists; the only one of its kind it seems?

A newer version of Wine has broken it and has done ever since.

--- Comment #30 from Lucas Fialho Zawacki lfzawacki@yahoo.com.br 2012-01-30 16:18:01 CST --- It instantly freezes in 1.2.3 up to the early 1.3 series. With the latest wine versions, including 1.4-rc1 it can play one song and then crashes just like the bug reporter claims, I tried 1by1 version 1.74 and 1.75.
HOWEVER, this might not be a regression. In 1.4-rc1 (and probably with some 1.3.* versions) if, before playing a song, you go to the settings -> audio and change the output from 'Direct Sound' to 'Wave Mapper' you can get it to play, pause, change songs, well everything with no crashes whatsoever. So I'm imagining that what happened to the bug reporter was something that changed his original configuration? Perhaps some update of the application or something on the wine side?
Well anyway, there's a workaround and I hope this gives sound devs some clues.

Thank you. I went into 1by1 Player settings, changed the "Output device" on the drop-down list to "Wave Mapper" and now 1by1 Player works properly with no problems at all. :)
I think "DirectSound" is the default setting, because I never changed the sound settings when I first tried 1by1 Player and it says "Default" next to "DirectSound", which you will see in the screenshot I'm about to upload.

What I'd like to know is whether:
- this app never crashed when "wave mapper" (winmm) was configured in any
version of Wine that you can use (0.9.x, 1.0.1,1,1.x,1.2.3, 1.3.x ...);
- this app has always crashed in any version of Wine when DirectSound was
configured;
- this app could once be used with a native dsound.dll.
I don't know any of the "technical" stuff about Wine, except for creating screenshots and uploading attachments with error messages. I'm an "end user" of Wine and I report bugs when I encounter problems with Wine.
I've always used 1by1 Player with the default settings; when I read the comment from Lucas Fialho Zawacki (comment 30) and read about changing the setting to "Wave Mapper", I now use "Wave Mapper" instead of DirectSound because 1by1 works flawlessly with Wave Mapper. The default setting in 1by1 Player after installing is DirectSound - not Wave Mapper.
I don't know if it's possible to install different versions of Wine on Ubuntu. I always get the newer Wine releases from the Update Manager in Ubuntu. I do know that 1by1 Player used to work in older versions of Wine, using the default settings in 1by1.

Excellent
I don't know if it's possible to install different versions of Wine on Ubuntu.
It is. Hopefully you'll find a web page that describes it because I won't go into details that I have not tried out line for line. Basically, you can use dpkg-deb --extract to extract the files from a .deb archive into your current directory. Since Wine is self-relocatable, it'll run from anywhere.
Then you use WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-1.2 /path/to/wine-1.2.x/bin/wine winecfg etc. to manage different prefixes, one for each version. I have approx. 20 such .wine directories... Then I use symbolic links such that big programs are located once only on the HD, outside the .wine directories. Only their registry entries are duplicated. That's it!

--- Comment #37 from Lucas Fialho Zawacki lfzawacki@yahoo.com.br 2012-02-22 14:05:08 CST --- Ok I did some investigation with different Wine versions and 1by1 Player 1.75, here it is:
1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.3.8: These versions basically don't work, the song doesnt even start playing. DirectSound: hangs and prints "fixme:dsalsa:IDsDriverBufferImpl_SetVolumePan (0x1a71c0,0x1a68e0): stub" WaveMapper: Just hangs
1.3.17, 1.3.25, 1.4.-rc1, 1.4-rc4: DirectSound: Plays one song and crashes when stopped or asked to play another, this is basically the original bug WaveMapper: Works fine like I described before
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with pure Alsa, no Pulseaudio. On a related note, later versions of Wine present a lot more Output Devices in the 1by1 settings and most of the ones related to Alsa work ('default' for example).
Jorg, if you need some crash dumps or some other stuff I can try to get it. I can even try to get a regression test going between some of these versions if you want, but it may take some time because I have limited access to a computer and the internetz right now.

--- Comment #44 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-04-30 10:24:03 CDT --- It's an application bug that Windows works around but Wine doesn't. The application releases the dsound primary buffer twice:
IDirectSound_CreateSoundBuffer(dsound, DSBCAPS_PRIMARYBUFFER, &primary); IDirectSoundBuffer_Release(primary); IDirectSound_CreateSoundBuffer(dsound, 0, &secondary); IDirectSoundBuffer_Play(secondary); ... IDirectSoundBuffer_Stop(secondary); IDirectSoundBuffer_Release(secondary); IDirectSoundBuffer_Release(primary); IDirectSound_Release(dsound);
It appears that Windows continually returns 0 from invalid primary IDSB_Release() calls. I'll write some tests for this.
