Same in 1.2-rc5. Though running in windows 95/98 gets a gui up, but the install fails. Running cabextract gets a few files out, but nothing of any use.

--- Comment #6 from markk@clara.co.uk 2010-07-06 13:15:26 --- The download.oldapps.com file is the DirectX end-user runtime, not the SDK. While it failing to install might be a bug, it's not this bug. :)
You can download the DirectX 6.1 SDK from http://rapidshare.com/files/405345012/dx61sdkimage.exe (75,224,112 bytes; MD5 c43d0071c84244858d40a94ed9a37ceb)
The message "No Direct3D, Switching to software rasterizer" mentioned above reminded me of bug 23263. I don't know whether the cause of was the same (maybe someone can test with an Wine 1.2rc3 or earlier), but the DirectX 6.1 SDK samples do run under Wine 1.2rc5 without showing that message box.
However most of them seem to have some rendering issues, e.g. all polygons black. They would probably be a good test suite for improving Wine's DirectX support.

--- Comment #7 from Mark K markk@clara.co.uk 2010-08-02 06:51:31 --- I think this bug can be closed.
I wasn't able to test with Wine 1.2rc3 (the last release prior to bug 23263 being fixed) since the .deb package for that isn't available from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/ubuntu/jaunty/
However I reverted to Wine 1.1.42 and got the same message as in the original bug description above. Updating to Wine 1.2, all the demos run as I mentioned in comment #6.
So it's most likely that bug 23263 was actually a duplicate of this one. If anyone wants to confirm without a huge ~72MB download, you can get the d3dim samples only (source and binaries) from http://rapidshare.com/files/410551404/d3dim_samples.zip (~5.5MB)
