Summary: The Witcher 2.0 (Gog.com): black screen on launch, have to kill X Product: Wine Version: 1.3.21 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com
On my ubuntu 11.04 laptop, where glxinfo | grep str says OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTS 360M/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06 I can install Witcher 2 and run its config utility, but launching the game itself yields a black screen even if you tell it to run in a window on a virtual desktop. Killing the game doesn't fix the screen, so it kind of sounds like a problem with the X server. Some people in the appdb have reported success with winetricks glsl=disabled d3dx9 but that didn't help here.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-05-31 09:29:26 CDT --- Strangely, after I changed the game's resolution to 640x480 in bin/Configurator.exe, this problem went away, even when I returned to higher resolutions.

--- Comment #2 from Alex Bradbury asb@asbradbury.org 2011-05-31 12:00:41 CDT --- Just for the sake of reference, had you applied the 1.1 Witcher 2 patch or not?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27344
--- Comment #3 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-05-31 12:46:27 CDT --- No. I was assuming that gog.com had already applied any needed patches and/or that the 1.1 patch would conflict with gog's "activation patch".

--- Comment #4 from Alex Bradbury asb@asbradbury.org 2011-05-31 12:53:18 CDT --- There's a GOG-specific version of the 1.1 patch (available under "additional content" under Witcher 2 in your GOG account page). Gog's version includes the release-day patch. I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 with binary nvidia drivers etc also - I'll see if I get the same crash.

--- Comment #5 from Alex Bradbury asb@asbradbury.org 2011-05-31 15:35:37 CDT --- I tested and had the same experience as Dan Kegel. I'm also running Ubuntu 11.04 (though in x86-64), and with Nvidia binary drivers.
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 260/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06
After saving settings once, I just get a blank screen but I can kill it as usual (winetricks glsl=disabled and d3dx9 does allow the game to work slowly).
It's possible that the 'configurator' sets one of the values in the game configuration file to something other than the default (i.e. what it is freshly after install). Investigating this might help pin down the source of this problem. Though for me the game didn't even launch until I'd opened the configurator once and then exited.

I confused myself, ignore this - this was when I was trying to use the launcher and instead I switched to launching the game directly. Irrelevant to the bug anyway.

--- Comment #7 from Xavier Vachon xvachon@gmail.com 2013-07-25 12:46:36 CDT --- Do you folks still experience this in current wine (1.6)? The game needs an override (d3dx9_36) to run on my system, without the override there is a black screen but I don't need to kill X to work around it, I can just pop a console and kill the game executable.
