Summary: Steam disables audio until system restart Product: Wine Version: 0.9.52. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: delnar.ersike@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=10114) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10114) The output leading up to the bug
When entering Steam, all sound is disabled on my system. Sound just doesn't work at all until I restart the computer. I also noted that the ALSA driver section in winecfg has disappeared, even if I am sure I have the ALSA driver installed on my system.

--- Comment #1 from AJ dainvinciblegama@gmail.com 2008-01-20 14:15:24 --- I can confirm this bug. When using the OSS driver in Steam, all sound is disabled in native linux apps (tested with music player and Rhythmbox) and Wine apps (no sound in CS:S). This bug does not affect the ALSA driver, but that driver is buggy in other ways an causes the game to crash every few minutes. Driver emulation doesn't help any (sound works but crashes).
I also noticed that steam.exe doesn't immediately close sometimes when I hit exit. I went to the gnome system monitor to close it, and sound comes back on. I used to do the restart thing like the other poster before I figured it out.
If someone can fix this for Steam I would really appreciate it. I would do it myself if I knew anything about it.
Thanks.

--- Comment #2 from AJ dainvinciblegama@gmail.com 2008-01-20 14:19:46 --- BTW just to add info, my computer runs
Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) x64 C2D E6600 nVidia 650i chipset (Analog Devices HDA sound I think) 2GB RAM filesystem is ext3, if that has anything to do with it (probably not)

--- Comment #3 from AJ dainvinciblegama@gmail.com 2008-01-20 14:26:33 --- Another addition.
The test sound function in the Wine Config window fails with an error(just says "Audio Test Failed").
If you need me to test anything else, just ask. I can't wait until this is fixed.

--- Comment #6 from tpapastylianou@hotmail.com 2008-01-28 14:42:30 --- I've had the exact same bug.
I've noticed that if I execute steam while playing a movie clip with totem or playing a music clip in audacious, then the sound works perfectly in steam.
If I run steam on its own, (i.e. with no active audio applications at the time) audio crashes until the next reboot.
the other thing I'd done before this worked was attempted to install pulseaudio and related packages on synaptic, but quickly regretted it and re-installed esound (esd). I doubt this had anything to do with it though - I hadn't tried running it with an audio application open before I fiddled with synaptic, but I'm assuming it would have worked back then too.
Let me know if this works for you.

--- Comment #8 from Gabriel delnar.ersike@gmail.com 2008-01-28 18:35:18 --- I have to add to my information that my sound device is HDA Intel, and that I have been having problems with the ALSA driver beforehand. If it helps, my motherboard is a D975XBX (not to be confused with the D975XBX2).
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11091
--- Comment #9 from AJ dainvinciblegama@gmail.com 2008-01-28 21:14:29 --- Yeah same here. If I open it up while some other app has an open handle on the sound, it works fine.
Also, I think my sound is rebadged HDA Intel. Asus board.
Thank you for confirming, Lei (or Zhang if that's your given(first) name).

--- Comment #10 from James Jurack jorenko+wine@gmail.com 2008-05-01 18:59:18 --- I can confirm this as well, however my system returns to normal after exiting Steam.
In addition, flash player in firefox will not play for more than 5 seconds while Steam is running.
Also, the audio problem isn't limited to linux apps for me as the opener said; Steam games are affected as well.
I'm on Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit with wine-0.9.59 from the ubuntu repos.
I see some of the same command-line output as others: err:dscapture:widDsCreate DirectSoundCapture flag not set This sound card's driver does not support direct access The (slower) DirectSound HEL mode will be used instead.
Some posters on the Ubuntu forums seem to think this is OSS-related, but I get identical results on both ALSA and OSS, and even with aoss wrapping OSS.

--- Comment #11 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-06-10 07:52:30 --- Steam does use sound for whatever reason. If your hardware & drivers does not support hardware mixing this indeed results in "disabled" sound while Steam is running. Are you sure you exiting Steam? If not - this bug is invalid.

--- Comment #12 from James Jurack jorenko+wine@gmail.com 2008-06-10 08:20:00 --- I am 100% sure that exiting steam causes the problem to go away -- in fact I never see it completely go away until I have culled all related wine processes as well.
I am now running on wine 1.0-rc3 and still have the same problem.
I now also suspect that this may only affect the 64-bit build, as I first saw this after switching from 32-bit ubuntu to 64-bit. However, I've as of yet not had time to reinstall 32-bit to confirm this.

Can you repeat that again? Are you saying that exiting all windows programs (which exits Wine) _fixes_ the problem?

Not necessarily all windows programs, but definitely Steam. The core of the problem seems to be that Steam is grabbing my audio hardware and not letting go until I close it.
Actually, yesterday I found a work-around on a forum somewhere that confirms this: If I disable all sound options in winecfg, then start Steam, then re-enable what I had before, the problem does not occur and I can use my sound normally, even for Steam games.

--- Comment #16 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-06-16 07:27:46 --- Closing invalid. Wine does exactly what it suppose to do. Bad application just opens sound for no good reason. Not Wine bug.

--- Comment #17 from James Jurack jorenko+wine@gmail.com 2008-06-16 08:15:19 --- It's not a wine bug that this opening of the sound behaves differently on wine than on windows?
