After the update to 1.5.20 now Metro2033 tries to start up in dx11 instead of dx9. I have wine set to winxp in winecfg.

Not necessarily, it could just try to load it and if it doesn't fail to load it thinks it's available and working (which is easier and better way to detect supported things than relying on system version).

Of course it's a wine problem. Running on XP you can't possibly get dx11 crash because there's no dx11 for XP, and this application is supposed to run on XP using dx9.
